Cake smash photography can be super cute. That’s if your baby is really into it, literally. The truth is, a lot of babies want nothing to do with smashing a cake to celebrate their very first birthday. This may be very disappointing especially to those parents who spent a pretty penny on a custom cake. trust me, I’ve been there myself. When I met baby Chaitra, I was really looking forward to capturing her cake smash experience. She was dressed like a doll in the cutest little outfit. I thought for sure these pictures were going to turn out nicely. Well, they did turn out great, but they weren’t what I had expected.
I drove all the way to Germantown, Maryland to capture this very special moment for Chaitra’s family. The cake was custom made and cost the family an additonal $90 to what I was charging them for the photo session. No matter how picture perfect the cake looked, Chaitra wanted nothing to do with it. Nope, nope, nope. Absolutely nothing. I can’t tell you how many times she pushed it off the cake stand or how many times she was trying to get away from it. Rice puffs made her happy. I ended up decorating her cake with rice puffs to possibly spark her interest. It worked, but only for a brief moment.
Parents, let’s get real. You may be able to get the Pintrest perfect baby photos that you’ve been eying, but please be prepared that your baby may shy away from the cake. To me, it’s all about expectations. Even though Chaitra did not get messy as hoped, I did capture some of the cutest facial expressions and a couple of smiles that were extremely rare that morning.
As parents, there are a few things you can take into consideration to help make the came smash experience a success. You can read more here.
