What To Do When Your Baby Is Wide Awake / Scottsdale, Arizona Newborn Photographer

March 24, 2021

Are you looking to hire a newborn photographer in Scottsdale, Arizona? It’s no coincidence that you have stumbled across my blog. Hello and welcome! You look at beautiful photos of sleeping newborn babies, and then look at your newborn baby who never seems to sleep for more than half an hour at a time. It’s completely understandable that you might be worried about whether or not your baby will sleep during a newborn photo shoot. I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to be concerned. I have a lot of experience working with sleepy newborn babies and not-so-sleepy newborn babies. There are steps that I can take to ensure a great newborn photography experience even if your little one won’t cooperate.

Did you know that almost all babies will spend part of their newborn photo shoot awake? That’s a good thing! This offers a perfect opportunity to take some photographs of your baby with their eyes open. Believe it or not, these photographs often turn out to be parents’ favorite images, so I love to include a few of baby awake in each family’s gallery. If your baby tends to be on the fussy side while awake, I will keep them wrapped so that they are warm, comfortable and less likely to startle.

My number one secret weapon to help calm your baby is undoubtedly the soothing sound of the BabyShusher. Providing a rhythmic shushing sound, this doctor – approved miracle mesmerises babies and infants into a sleep state once their basic nurturing needs have been met. The BabyShusher has been a must have tool in my camera bag for many years and only requires new batteries every now and then. If your baby is still feeling unsettled we’ll work together to figure out what they need – perhaps it’s gas, hunger or they just want to be held. My approach to newborn photography is entirely baby-led. I only photograph one newborn session per day to have as much time as we need for your baby to settle. All babies will fall asleep eventually – we just have to follow their lead. If you scroll down to the final featured image of this blog post, you will see what I mean.

I love this post so much! I think that’s the #1 question most mom’s want to know! And you have all the secrets to a successful newborn session. Love that you let the baby determine the session 😍

    • Stephanie Honikel says:

Thank you, Stacey. One thing I have learned over the years is that you cannot force a newborn to sleep. They’re on their own schedule. That’s the very reason I went from mainly posed newborn photogrpahy to offering both, lifestyle and posed newborn photography. As a photographer I can maximize the photography experience for the parents, so they don’t have to stress about any time constraint. Baby will fall asleep eventually 😉

Thank you, Nina. We had ours in pretty much every photo shoot we have done. He’s no longer with us, so they’re even more special now.
