As a Northern Virginia family photographer, one of the questions I’m asked most often is:
“What should we wear for our family photos?”
And I completely understand why. Choosing outfits for yourself is one thing, but coordinating an entire family can feel overwhelming fast. The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is to help you look and feel like the best version of yourselves, without stress, without overthinking, and without losing the natural connection that makes your family unique.
Over the years, I’ve styled hundreds of families across Northern Virginia, and I’ve learned exactly what works, what photographs beautifully, and what helps create images that feel timeless year after year.
1. Start With One Person’s Outfit, Then Build Around It

ToggleInstead of trying to style everyone at once, begin with the person who’s often the focus of the session – usually Mom. This is where the process becomes much simpler, especially when you don’t feel like you have to start from scratch.
For many moms, choosing what to wear can feel like the most stressful part of planning family photos. That’s why I offer access to my curated client closet, which includes timeless, flattering dresses selected specifically for family sessions. These pieces are designed to photograph beautifully while still feeling comfortable and natural to wear, so you don’t have to worry about shopping or guessing what will work on camera.
Once your outfit is chosen, styling the rest of the family becomes much easier. We can pull colors and textures from your dress to guide everyone else’s look, creating a cohesive palette without matching exactly. Soft fabrics, classic silhouettes, and flowy dresses tend to photograph especially well and add movement and ease to your portraits.
As your Northern Virginia family photographer, I help guide this entire process so nothing feels overwhelming or guesswork-heavy – just simple, thoughtful, and well planned.

Neutral tones photograph beautifully and will always feel timeless. Think creams, oatmeal, soft blues, muted greens, warm grays, and gentle browns. These tones complement natural skin tones and allow your family connection to stand out more than the clothing.
Neutrals also allow your images to blend seamlessly with your home décor when displayed as wall art, albums, or framed prints.
A few palettes that work wonderfully for family photography in Northern Virginia:
You don’t need everyone to wear the exact same colors. Just stay within the same tonal family for harmony and softness.
Patterns can look busy or distracting in photos, especially when multiple people wear them. But texture? Texture brings depth, warmth, and richness to your images.
Think:
When you mix textures, outfits feel layered and cohesive without appearing too “styled.”
If you love patterns, keep them minimal and simple – a small floral on a dress or a subtle plaid on a child’s shirt can work beautifully when everyone else is in solids.

The days of everyone dressing in white shirts and jeans are long gone. Coordinating instead of matching allows each family member’s personality to shine while still creating a unified overall look.
A good rule of thumb:
This feels effortless and classic, something I always aim for during family photography sessions in Northern Virginia.
Children photograph best when they feel comfortable and free to move. Choose clothing they can play, snuggle, sit, and run in, like soft knits, simple rompers, cozy sweaters, or airy dresses.
Avoid:
Bare feet are lovely for in-home or studio sessions. For outdoor sessions, simple sandals or neutral shoes work best.
I also have a client wardrobe for babies and young children, which many families find incredibly helpful. As your family photographer in Northern Virginia, my goal is always to remove stress, not add to it.

Layers add dimension and movement to your photos. A cardigan, shawl, denim jacket, or scarf gives your images visual interest and allows you to easily shift your look during the session.
A few reliable accessories that photograph beautifully:
Avoid accessories that draw too much attention. Oversized bows, bright hats, loud jewelry, or anything that becomes the focal point instead of your family.
Instead of competing with your surroundings, your clothing should enhance them.
For example:
During your planning process, I help you pull together a palette that works with your chosen location, whether we’re photographing in your home, outdoors, or in the studio.
As your Northern Virginia family photographer, my goal is to make sure every detail, from wardrobe to location to lighting, comes together naturally and effortlessly.

One of the things families appreciate most about working together is that you’re never expected to figure this all out alone. Styling is a collaborative process, and I’m here to guide you with gentle, thoughtful suggestions that feel true to your family’s personality.
Before every session, we review outfit choices, color palettes, and the overall vision you have for your photos. Whether you prefer something relaxed and playful or more refined and elegant, we’ll create a look that feels cohesive without feeling “overdone.”
My goal as your Northern Virginia family photographer is to remove the stress that often comes with planning, so when the day arrives, you can be fully present, enjoy your family, and trust that everything is beautifully aligned.
Make sure everyone’s outfit fits comfortably and feels good when sitting, picking up little ones, or walking.
Some materials wrinkle easily and can be distracting in photos. Choose fabrics that hold their shape well.
Timeless photos come from timeless styling. Natural, glowy makeup and soft, simple hairstyles always photograph beautifully.
Styling your family for photos doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With the right guidance and a simple approach, your session can feel effortless, and your portraits can look beautifully timeless.
If you’re beginning to plan your next session, I would love to help you every step of the way. As a Northern Virginia family photographer, it’s my joy to create images that feel natural, connected, and true to the season your family is in.
Whenever you’re ready, we can start crafting something beautiful together.

1. What should we avoid wearing for family photos?
Try to avoid neon colors, bold logos, stiff fabrics, mismatched patterns, and bright whites that can reflect light. These elements can distract the eye and take focus away from your connection as a family.
2. Do you help with outfit selection?
Absolutely. Every session includes a styling consultation where I help you choose outfits from your own closet or my curated client wardrobe. Many families tell me this is one of their favorite parts of working with a family photographer in Northern Virginia.
3. Can we include pets in our family session?
Of course. Pets are part of the family! I’ll help guide you on outfit choices that work well for a pet-friendly session and recommend tips to keep things calm and enjoyable for everyone.
