Do you agree that breastfeeding photography is beautiful? Thank you for reading my blog post today. For a long time, I was unsure if I wanted to post images of a mother breastfeeding her baby. Born and raised in Germany, I didn’t know how people in the United States would react to images like that. Recently, I came across a website that specifically targets to women who are interested in professional breastfeeding photography. I am NOT kidding! There are photographers around the globe that specialize in breastfeeding photography. There are professional breastfeeding photographers right here in the United States of America. I was positively surprised. As a newborn photographer, I am all about capturing special moments. Breastfeeding is as special as it gets; breastfeeding means so much more than just nurturing a baby.
When scheduling newborn and baby photography sessions, I always make sure that there is plenty of time for a mother to nurture her child. When I took these images of three month old Max and his mother, Maren, a few months ago we didn’t plan on taking such intimate images. I remember Max being restless and tired. Maren decided to breastfeed him and I asked her if she’d be okay with me capturing that special moment for her. It was important to me to not focus on the exposed breast. Instead, I wanted to highlight the physical bond between mother and child. Holding hands , for example, or Maren gently supporting her child’s head were all beautiful details to me that I wanted to capture. Breastfeeding photography doesn’t mean that you have to have your bare breast photographed. After all, I want every mom to feel comfortable and not ashamed during her session with me.Writing this blog post I do not intend to offer professional breastfeeding photography sessions, however, I will always be willing to capture that very special moment for a mother during a newborn or baby photography session if she would like me to. Because why not?!
