Congratulations, mama-to-be! As the big day approaches, it’s time to pack your hospital bag. As your Northern Virginia newborn photographer, I have created an essential hospital bag checklist to help you prepare for your baby’s arrival in the DMV. Happy packing!
When Should You Pack?
Aim to have your hospital bag packed by week 36 of your pregnancy. This ensures you’re ready for anything while giving you peace of mind as you enter the final stretch. If you’re at risk for early delivery, consider packing around week 32–34.
What to Consider Before Packing?
- Hospital Guidelines: Each hospital is different. Check with your delivery hospital in the DMV to see what they provide for moms and babies, so you can avoid overpacking. Many local hospitals provide diapers, wipes, and postpartum essentials.
- Weather: Whether you’re welcoming your baby during the sticky summer or the crisp winter months, consider the season when packing clothing for you and your little one.
- Drive Times: DMV traffic can be unpredictable! Factor in extra time and keep your bag accessible for an easy grab-and-go.
- Comfort and Sentimentality: This is a milestone moment. Include items that bring you comfort and joy. This could be your favorite blanket, a photo, or a playlist that calms your nerves.
- Length of stay: Typically, moms stay 1-2 days for a vaginal delivery and 3-4 days for a C-section. Pack accordingly.
Start With the Essentials – Your Documents
I know this part is kind of…overstated and a little bit boring, but it’s vital. Your most important hospital bag checklist items are basically all your documents and paperwork.
- Your social security card (if you have it)
- Your ID/driver’s license (and an extra photocopy of them!)
- Your health insurance cards. If you can, also bring a photocopy of them!
- A list of any materials (such as latex) and medications (such as specific painkillers) that you are allergic to.
- Your birth plan
It helps to have all these items in a folder that’s ready to go. This way, you’re organized should the day come a little earlier than anticipated!
Consider these Items for Comfort
Preparing for the arrival of your little one is a journey filled with love and anticipation, so I’ve created this hospital bag checklist to ensure you have everything you need for comfort, peace of mind, and those precious first moments with your baby.
- Hair ties: Something, anything, to get your hair out of your face! It’s going to bother you, I promise. Bring a hair tie or a headband to keep your hair back and out of the way! Avoid clips – they’ll probably poke you.
- Toiletries: Bring some simple toiletries to make yourself feel a little bit refreshed. You’ll appreciate having a toothbrush/toothpaste, facewash/wipe, travel sized body wash and shampoo, deodorant, lip balm, as well as contact lenses/glasses if you need them.
- Comfy socks/slippers: Maybe some soft and comfy socks or lightweight slippers. They’ll make you feel a little bit more at home. Hospitals are often on the colder side as well, so keeping those feet warm will be nice!
- Loose-fitting gown or robe: Though hospitals provide gowns, you may want your own for comfort.
- Comfy pajamas: Hospitals are often hot – pack accordingly.
- Going-home outfit: Loose, breathable clothing like maternity leggings or a maxi dress are highly recommended. For c-section moms, prioritize something that won’t irritate your incision.
- Favorite blanket/pillow from home: Include a case that can get ruined and is distinguishable from the hospital white
- Snacks and drinks: Think non-perishable snacks such as protein bars and trail mix and bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated
- Phone charger, earbuds and light reading
Consider these Postpartum Essentials
- Postpartum underwear: Consider these high-waisted or disposable options for comfort and support.
- Nursing bras and pads: Bring a couple of nursing bras that provide comfort, support, and easy access for breastfeeding.
- Nipple cream: Consider packing some nipple cream if you’re planning to breastfeed to soothe and protect sore, cracked, or dry nipples.
- Perineal care items: Some moms prefer bringing their own pads or cooling pads for extra comfort.
Consider these Items for Your Baby
- Clothing: Consider packing a couple of newborn onesies and a hat that is appropriate for the season. I also recommend packing baby socks and mittens and a going home outfit in newborn size and one in 0-3 months just in case.
- Baby blanket: Consider a soft swaddle or receiving blanket for cuddles and photos.
- Car seat: Install your baby’s car seat ahead of time and have it inspected if possible (many DMV fire stations offer this service).
- Feeding supplies: If you’re formula-feeding, bring your preferred formula and bottles.
Consider these Items for Your Partner or Support Person
- Clothing: Comfortable layers and an extra outfit.
- Snacks & Drinks: To keep their energy up during long hours and to not eat yours.
- Electronics: Phone chargers, camera, or any devices for documenting the moment.
- Comfort Items: A small blanket or neck pillow for resting.
