It’s a question that comes up for many moms just like you, who aren’t sure which setting will truly capture the love, joy, and authentic moments your family shares. Here’s the good news: there’s no wrong choice, and part of my job is to help you figure out what’s the right fit for your family.

When you step into my photography studio in Northern Virginia, you’re entering a space designed specifically with families, babies, and beauty in mind. Studio photo sessions have so much to offer, and I absolutely adore them for so many reasons. For example, the lighting in the studio is something truly special. I’ve designed the space with soft, natural light in mind, so you and your little ones always look your best, soft, radiant, and glowing.
My photography studio also comes with a sense of calm predictability. We don’t have to worry about whether your home has enough natural light or if the toys in the background will make their way into the photos (your home is beautiful, but I get it—sometimes it feels impossible to tidy up when you’re in the thick of motherhood). Instead, I’ve created a clean, cozy backdrop where every detail is perfectly curated. From neutral tones to simple, timeless setups, the stage is already set for portraits that are all about you and your family.
Something else I love about my studio photography sessions is that they provide some structure, which is really helpful, especially for newborns and little ones. The environment is controlled, quiet, and comforting, creating an ideal space to capture those precious early days or little milestones. Plus, I know how stressful it can feel to get everyone up and out of the house, so I’ve gone the extra mile to make your time in the studio seamless, easy, and enjoyable.

Now, if you’re someone who loves the idea of cozy, intimate, and meaningful storytelling, an in-home session might be your perfect match. There’s something so special about capturing the place where your family feels most at ease and connected — your home. The beauty of in-home photography is that it’s authentic in the purest sense. It’s you cuddled up on the couch reading a story, swaddling your newborn in their nursery, or sharing belly laughs in the kitchen during snack time.
One thing I hear from so many moms is how much they appreciate the laid-back nature of in-home sessions. Because we’re working in your space, everything feels relaxed and natural. There’s no rushing out the door or worrying if you packed everything. Simply put, these sessions allow everything to unfold organically because they’re set in the heart of your family’s daily life.
But here’s the thing, my in-home sessions are not your typical “lifestyle photos” where a photographer shows up, snaps some candid shots, and calls it a day. I approach in-home sessions with a thoughtfulness and high level of service that I’m proud to say sets SHP apart.

When you book an in-home photography session with me, you’re not just getting someone with a camera; you’re getting a full-service experience that meets you exactly where you are and makes your life easier. I know motherhood can be as exhausting as it is beautiful, and I want this session to feel like a breath of fresh air for you. Here’s how I go above and beyond to make that happen:
Mama, you deserve to feel amazing, photographs or not! That’s why, with all my in-home photo sessions, I’ll arrange for a professional hair and makeup artist to come to your home. No more scrambling to get yourself prepped while also juggling your little ones. They’ll pamper you right in the comfort of your own space so you feel confident, camera-ready, and oh-so-beautiful.
If you’ve been stressing about what to wear for your photoshoot, take a deep breath and relax, because I’ve got you covered. My client wardrobe offers a curated selection of stunning, timeless pieces for you and your little one. Whether it’s a dreamy gown for you or neutral, coordinating onesies and swaddle wraps for your baby, you’ll have access to a stunning wardrobe that photographs beautifully and takes the guesswork out of planning.
Some moms love those classically posed family portraits, while others want images that feel raw and real, like a snapshot of their everyday life. You shouldn’t have to choose. During your in-home session, we’ll create a balance of both. I’ll guide you through some natural, flattering poses, but I’ll also step back and capture those in-between moments, the giggles, the snuggles, the real stuff. That mix tells your family’s story in a way that feels full and honest.

I know what you’re thinking, “But Stephanie, I don’t want anyone photographing my messy house!” And I totally get that. But we won’t be documenting clutter or chaos. Instead, I focus on the small, meaningful details that make your home yours, the baby blanket draped over the couch, the light pouring into your favorite corner, the cozy bed where you all read stories together. Your home doesn’t have to be perfect to be perfect for photos.

At the end of the day, whether you choose a studio or in-home newborn photography session in Northern Virginia or DC, I want this experience to be so much more than a photoshoot. I want it to be a chance to slow down and soak in the fleeting, beautiful moments of motherhood that you’ll carry with you forever. You’ve worked hard to build this life — this love — and I feel so honored to help you preserve it.
If you’re ready to plan a studio or in-home newborn photography session or just have more questions bubbling to the surface, feel free to reach out. I’d love to walk you through the process and help you make a decision that feels 100% right for your family.

What is the difference between a studio and in-home newborn photography session?
A studio session takes place in my Northern Virginia photography studio, a space designed specifically for families and newborns with controlled lighting, curated backdrops, and a calm, quiet environment. Everything is already set up and ready for you. An in-home session takes place in your own home and captures your family in the space where you feel most like yourselves, your nursery, your living room, your favorite cozy corners. Both create beautiful, timeless images. The difference is really in the feeling: studio sessions tend to feel more classic and polished, while in-home sessions feel intimate, personal, and deeply authentic.
Which is better for a newborn — a studio or in-home photography session?
Honestly, both are wonderful for newborns and the right choice really depends on your family. The studio offers a controlled, quiet environment with ideal lighting that is especially helpful in those early, unpredictable newborn days. In-home newborn photo sessions offer the comfort of your own space, which can help a newborn stay calm and settled. If you love the idea of capturing the nursery you spent months putting together, or the couch where you spend your nights feeding, that is an in-home session. If you want something more timeless and curated without worrying about lighting or tidying up — that is the studio. Either way, I will guide you through every moment so your baby and your family feel completely at ease.
Do I have to clean my house before an in-home newborn session?
No and I mean that genuinely, not just to be reassuring. We are not photographing your whole house. We are photographing the meaningful details of your life with a newborn: the soft light by the window, the way your baby fits in your arms on the couch, the nursery you created with so much love. A little tidying in the specific spaces we plan to use is helpful, but a deep clean is absolutely not required. Part of my job is to find the beauty in the real, lived-in spaces of your home and I am very good at it.
Does hair and makeup come included with studio or in-home newborn photography sessions?
Yes! With every newborn session, I arrange for a professional hair and makeup artist to come directly to your home before the session begins. You do not have to schedule it, travel anywhere, or figure out timing around your newborn’s feeding schedule. It is handled entirely for you, and it makes such a difference in how you feel walking into your session. You deserve to feel genuinely beautiful in these images, not just put-together, but truly radiant and this is one of the ways I make sure that happens.
What should I wear for an in-home newborn photography session?
Soft, muted tones photograph most beautifully in the warm, natural light of an in-home session. Cream, ivory, blush, sage, dusty blue, and warm neutrals all work wonderfully. Avoid very busy patterns, bright neons, and stark white, which can overexpose in natural window light. Comfort matters just as much as color — you will be holding, feeding, and snuggling your newborn throughout the session, so choose something that moves easily and feels good on your body. And remember, my client wardrobe is available to you if you would rather not think about it at all. I will pull pieces I know will photograph beautifully for your skin tone and your home’s palette. Do you offer both posed and lifestyle newborn photos?
Yes, and you do not have to choose between them. During every in-home session, we create a mix of both. I will guide you through some intentional, flattering poses, the kinds of images you will want to frame, and I will also step back and document the real, in-between moments as they happen naturally. The combination of posed and unposed images is what makes a newborn session feel complete. You get the portraits and the story, and together they tell the full picture of who your family is in this moment.
Can siblings and pets be included in newborn photos?
Absolutely, and some of my favorite images from any newborn session involve a big brother or sister meeting the baby for what feels like the hundredth time but still looks like the first. Siblings and pets add so much warmth and personality to a newborn session. For siblings, I always recommend scheduling their portion of the session first while their energy is highest, then transitioning to quieter newborn portraits once they have had their moment. For pets, I find that a few intentional images with the family together work beautifully without making the session feel chaotic. We will talk through all of this during your consultation so the day feels easy and relaxed for everyone.
