Morning sickness…the first, and often the least favored, sign that you are pregnant! I know. I’ve been there with my own kiddo. Morning sickness is not only unpleasant, but it’s also uncomfortable, and it can drastically impact your day. Nobody wants to wake up, get sick, and then go to work. It’s awful.

That doesn’t mean you have to suffer through it! There are some morning sickness tips that I think can seriously help you along the way. Don’t worry, we’re digging deeper than the age-old “ginger tea” talk. I guarantee these tips are tried, true, and tremendously helpful! Let’s dive in!

Top 3 Morning Sickness Tips

  1. Eat Something Before You Get Out of Bed

This is one of the best morning sickness tips out there today. Your body is experiencing heightened sensitivity when you’re pregnant. This means you’re more likely to experience things like motion sickness and nausea when you start moving your body. Something that often helps this is eating something before you get out of bed in the morning. You want to have something in your tummy before you start moving. This will help stabilize your blood sugar levels and give your body something to settle it before the nausea even begins. Your best bet is to eat something bland, like a piece of toast or a biscuit!

As a Northern VA newborn photographer, this is actually a tip I recommend to any mother who schedules an early maternity photoshoot with me. I know that morning sessions can be tough, and some mothers actually experience morning sickness throughout their entire pregnancy (sorry to be the bearer of bad news). So, I personally love this tip!

  1. Smell a Pleasant Scent as a Morning Sickness Tip

Just as some scents make you nauseous when you’re pregnant, others will ease nausea and even enhance your mood. Consider giving aromatherapy a try with some essential oils and a diffuser. You will have to go through a little trial and error to figure out which scents work for you, and take it slow! Add one drop at a time to the diffuser. Even if it’s a scent you enjoy, too much of a good thing isn’t always a good thing, especially when you’re pregnant.

If you don’t want to spend the money on a diffuser, you can just buy the oils and give them a quick, gentle sniff. If citrusy scents are what suit you, you have the added bonus of being able to slice open a lime or an orange and give it a whiff!

*Quick Tip* Toss a few jars of essential oil in your hospital day delivery bag just in case you feel a little bit sick on the big day!

  1. Limit Screen Time in the Morning or Reduce the Strength of it

I know. All you want when you feel nauseous is to distract yourself, and with today’s technology, there’s so much to do that with. However, scrolling through your phone or tablet can actually make nausea worse due to the visual movements and array of colors and structures on the screen. It sounds made up, but it’s true!

One of the best morning sickness tips is to either avoid screens entirely when you’re feeling ill in the morning hours or to reduce their strength. Reducing the strength means making the font size larger, zooming in to avoid eye strain, reducing or enhancing the brightness pending your personal comfort, and scrolling slowly. It makes a world of difference!

Do You Have Any Other Morning Sickness Tips?

I want to briefly mention that there is no hard and fast treatment for morning sickness for every single woman out there. What works for someone else may have the opposite effect on you. That’s simply because all of our bodies are different. So, don’t get frustrated, and keep the Pepto on hand while you test out some methods for yourself and find a combination that works for you!

If you know any morning sickness tips that could help our fellow mamas, leave a comment letting them know! I look forward to hearing your advice. Don’t forget pregnancy is short-lived. Make sure to schedule your maternity shoot with an experienced Northern Virginia maternity photographer like me!
