As one of the top newborn photographers in D.C., I would love to chat about the best newborn photo poses that I like to use during my in-home newborn photography sessions. Not only does this help you know what to expect on the day of your photoshoot, but it helps you to feel comfortable with the process. Showing you what my favorite poses are is a great first step in doing just that!
In this article, I’ll cover the best newborn photo poses I like to use with my clients and what each of those poses looks like. Let’s dive in!
Table of Contents
ToggleOne of the best newborn photo poses is the swaddle! To be completely honest, capturing newborn photos while they’re swaddled is one of my absolute favorites. In fact, it’s done in pretty much every session. There are a few reasons for this. First of all, it’s easy to get family photos in when your newborn is swaddled. You, as the mom, don’t have to worry about the way your baby’s body is positioned because…well…it’s all wrapped up like a little cocoon!
Additionally, newborns like being swaddled. It keeps them calm, secure, and cozy! They feel their safest in this pose as it mimics their position in the womb. Admittedly, it’s also just super cute to see your little one all bundled up!
The side pose is another one of the best newborn photo poses! In this pose, your newborn is resting on their side, oftentimes with one arm resting under their head while the other one is resting on the hip or tummy. Alternatively (and very much dependent on your baby), both arms are positioned under their head.
This pose just makes them look like they’re relaxed, living their best lives, and not worried about a thing! Honestly, they kind of look like they belong hanging out on a beach somewhere! This is also a unique angle, as babies don’t typically rest on their sides. So, you get to see your little one in a whole new light!
The chin-on-hand pose is one of my all-time favorites. It’s a pose that allows me to capture a lot of detail in your newborn’s face. For example, I get a detailed photo of their lashes, their pouty lips, and their high cheekbones! This pose also involves your baby’s chin/cheek resting on their hands, which are crossed in front of them. In this position, I can capture their adorable side profile as they’re hanging out on your master bed, daydreaming about sugar plums and fairies no doubt!
Lastly, I just had to highlight the tushy-up pose! Who doesn’t love seeing their newborn all snug on a bed with their tushy up in the air? SO cute! It’s a classic newborn pose that they actually do naturally quite often. This is beneficial as the pose won’t feel abnormal to your little one during their photoshoot. They’ll be comfortable and relaxed as it’s a body position they’re already used to!
Those are the best newborn photo poses to take in D.C.! I just love the way your newborn looks, all snuggled up in a swaddle or resting on their side. My goal with any newborn shoot in D.C. is to help your baby feel as comfortable as possible and for you to feel as comfortable as possible as well.
