Deciding what to wear for maternity photos is one of those things that sounds simple until you are standing in front of your closet at 32 weeks, nothing fits the way it used to, and you have approximately zero energy to figure it out.
As a Northern Virginia maternity photographer and a mom myself, I have been there. I know what it feels like when your body is changing faster than your wardrobe can keep up, and I know how much it matters to feel genuinely beautiful when you show up to your session.
This is not a list of generic outfit rules but rather a complete guide. It covers every style, every season, what to wear if you are including your partner or a toddler, where to shop locally in the DC and Northern Virginia area, and how my client closet can take the whole decision off your plate entirely if you want it to.
By the time you finish reading this, you will know exactly what to wear!
Not sure where to start? Let’s figure it out together. Book a free consult call here and we will talk through your vision, your timeline, and exactly what will make you feel like the most beautiful version of yourself on session day.

There is no right or wrong answer here. Some mamas want their bump front and center, celebrated in every frame. Others prefer something more draped and flowy that hints at the silhouette without clinging to it. Both approaches are beautiful, and both photograph incredibly well. The only thing that matters is what feels true to you.
Here is how each approach tends to look and feel:
The sweet spot for maternity photos is between 28 and 36 weeks. Your bump is beautifully pronounced, you still have energy for a session, and your body has not yet reached the final stages of physical discomfort. If you are expecting multiples, aim for 26 to 30 weeks.
Timing matters for outfit planning because how you are carrying at 28 weeks is very different from how you are carrying at 36 weeks, and what fits and feels good will shift too.
Book your session first, then plan your outfits closer to your actual date. You will have a much better sense of how you are carrying and what feels good once you are actually in that window.

The most common mistake I see is mamas buying something that should fit by the session date, or trying to squeeze into a pre-pregnancy piece because they love it. I understand the impulse completely. But the truth is that a perfectly fitting simple dress will always photograph better than an ill-fitting statement piece.
A few things that consistently work at any stage of pregnancy:
And one gentle reminder: you do not need to look like a different version of yourself in these photos. You need to look like the most beautiful version of who you are right now. That is the whole point of this session.
The best colors for maternity photos are soft, muted, and skin-tone-complementing. Cream, blush, sage, dusty blue, rust, and rich jewel tones all photograph beautifully. Avoid neon, stark bright white, and very busy patterns that draw the eye away from your face and bump.
The right palette makes your skin glow, your bump look luminous, and the background feel like it was designed for you.

Colors to approach carefully
How to factor in your skin tone
Warmer skin tones tend to love rust, cream, terracotta, and gold. Cooler skin tones often look stunning in dusty blue, sage, deep burgundy, and soft lavender. If you are not sure, cream and soft earth tones are universally flattering and almost impossible to get wrong.
How to factor in your location
Northern Virginia’s wooded parks and open fields have gorgeous green and golden tones that love earthy palettes. If you are doing a more urban session in DC or Old Town Alexandria, you have a little more room to play with richer, more saturated tones.

Avoid clothes that pull or gap across the bump, busy horizontal stripes, fabrics that wrinkle badly, uncomfortable shoes, brand new unworn outfits, and anything that makes you feel less than beautiful. Comfort and confidence will always show up in your photos.
I am sharing this list with nothing but kindness because I want you to walk away from your session loving every single image. These are the things that consistently make photos harder to love:

A client closet is a curated wardrobe of gowns, and dresses that clients can borrow for their session at no extra cost. It removes the stress of shopping while pregnant and gives you access to beautiful, camera-tested pieces that photograph consistently well.
Shopping for a maternity photo outfit while pregnant is, frankly, a lot. You are tired, your body is changing week to week, and the last thing most mamas need is the pressure of finding the perfect dress on top of everything else. That is exactly why I offer my clients access to my client closet.
My client closet is a curated collection of flowy gowns, and fitted dresses in a range of sizes and colors. Every piece has been chosen specifically for how it photographs, how it moves, and how it feels on a real pregnant body. You are not guessing whether something will work on camera. I already know it will.

The flowy gown is the most popular maternity photo look, and once you see it moving through golden hour light in an open Virginia field, you will completely understand why. There is something genuinely magical about a dress with movement and length, especially when there is a breeze involved.
What makes a gown work for maternity specifically is the combination of length, fabric, and silhouette. A well-chosen gown is simultaneously bump-forward and elegant.

Styling tips for gowns
My client closet has several gown options in different colors and fabrics. If you have always wanted to do the flowy gown look but did not want to invest in buying one, this is exactly what the closet is for.

If a gown says romance, a fitted dress says confidence. This is the most direct way to celebrate your bump, and when it is done well, it is genuinely powerful.
Styles that work for fitted maternity looks
What to keep in mind
Fabric matters more in a fitted look than any other style. Jersey and modal stretch with you throughout the session. Avoid stiff or structured fabrics that will fight your bump rather than move with it.
Yes, you can absolutely wear regular clothes or separates for maternity photos. A bump-baring crop top with a flowy skirt, an open linen shirt over a simple bodysuit, or elevated jeans with a beautiful draped blouse can all create stunning, personal images. Separates work especially well for lifestyle sessions or any session that includes a partner or toddler.
Not every maternity photo needs a gown. If you are someone who looked at all those flowy dress images and thought that is just not me, separates might be exactly right for you. The key is keeping the palette cohesive and making sure each individual piece is intentional.

Casual maternity sessions are some of my very favorite to photograph, especially when they are done at home or in a meaningful location. There is an intimacy to a lifestyle maternity session, in your kitchen, in the nursery you have been putting together, in the backyard where your kids play, that a more formal session simply cannot replicate.
A soft linen set, a beautiful oversized knit sweater, a simple sundress in a muted tone. Elevated everyday wear that feels like you on your best day.

Including Your Partner
Your partner’s outfit should support yours, not compete with it. Build their look around your anchor outfit. If you are in cream and sage, they look great in tan, olive, or warm white. Dark or medium jeans with a simple button-down or linen shirt work for almost every maternity session style.
Some of the most tender images from any maternity session are the ones with both of you in them. The way a partner looks at a bump, the way they hold you, the quiet conversations that happen between poses. Those moments are worth capturing, and how your partner is dressed matters for how cohesive those images look.
What tends to work well for partners
What to avoid for partners
Both of you should feel equally like yourselves. Neither person should be dressed for a different session.

Keep children in the color palette but do not over-coordinate. Comfort is non-negotiable because an uncomfortable toddler will tell their face about it. Simple linen or cotton pieces in coordinating tones work beautifully, and always bring a backup outfit.
A few things that make including children easier:
The very best sibling images usually happen when the child has a moment with mom and the bump: a kiss, a listen, a hand placed carefully on the belly. Keep their outfit simple and let the moment be the whole picture.

For spring maternity photos, choose soft, light fabrics in muted pastels, sage, cream, and blush. Northern Virginia spring sessions can be cool in the mornings, so build in a layer you can remove as the day warms. Light chiffon, soft jersey, and linen all move beautifully in spring light.
Spring in Northern Virginia is one of the most beautiful seasons to be photographed in, pregnant or otherwise. The light has this incredibly soft, diffused quality in April and May, the backgrounds are lush and green, and the blooming trees at spots like Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna or Oatlands in Leesburg.
The practical reality of spring: mornings can still be genuinely cool, especially in March and early April. A light cardigan, a linen wrap, or a soft draped layer can be built into the look rather than treated as an afterthought you stuff in the car.

For summer maternity photos, breathable fabric is everything. Linen and soft cotton are your best friends. Schedule your session at golden hour when the light is softer and the temperature has dropped, and choose a warm ivory, sandy neutral, soft coral, or sky blue palette.
I will be honest with you about summer sessions: being pregnant in Northern Virginia summer heat is hard. But a golden hour session at 7pm in July, when the light turns that warm amber color and there is finally a breeze, is absolutely worth planning for. The images look genuinely cinematic.
Fabric is the most important decision you will make for a summer maternity session. Linen and soft cotton breathe. Polyester and synthetic blends do not. This will matter enormously when you are 33 weeks pregnant standing in a field.

Fall maternity photos are the most popular sessions of the year, and the color palette almost styles itself. Lean into burgundy, rust, mustard, forest green, camel, and deep teal. Layering adds texture and visual depth, and the Northern Virginia fall foliage provides a backdrop that elevates any outfit.
Fall is when my calendar fills up faster than any other season, and maternity sessions are a huge part of that. There is something about the combination of a beautiful bump and the rich, warm light of an October afternoon in Northern Virginia that creates images unlike anything else I make all year.
Northern Virginia fall locations I love for maternity sessions: Morven Park, Oatlands, Algonkian Park, or Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. I’ve highlighted some other location options here!

Winter maternity photos call for rich, layered, and cozy outfits. Deep navy, cream, forest green, blush, and rich plum all work beautifully. Coats, wraps, and scarves can be part of your look rather than something to hide from the camera. Indoor lifestyle sessions are a beautiful alternative if outdoor cold is not your thing.
Winter maternity sessions have a quieter, more intimate beauty than the drama of fall or the brightness of spring. Bare trees in soft overcast light, the kind that flatters skin tones like almost nothing else, cozy textures, and the warmth of being very visibly, very beautifully pregnant in the middle of a season that feels made for nesting.
For mamas who are due in winter and nervous about the cold: an indoor lifestyle session at your home is one of the most personal and meaningful options available. Your nursery, your living room window, your kitchen in the morning light. These sessions feel genuinely intimate in a way that outdoor sessions sometimes cannot.

A little preparation before your session makes everything run more smoothly and more comfortably. Here is what I always recommend:
Check out these 5 tips to help prep for your maternity photoshoot!
What should I wear for maternity photos?
Start with what makes you feel most like yourself, then refine from there. A flowy gown, a fitted jersey dress, or elevated separates all create beautiful images. The most important thing is that your outfit is comfortable, fits well, and makes you feel genuinely beautiful.
What colors are best for maternity photos?
Soft neutrals, earth tones, and muted pastels photograph most consistently well. Cream, blush, sage, rust, dusty blue, and rich jewel tones are all excellent choices. Avoid neon, stark white, and very busy patterns.
Should I show my bump in maternity photos?
Only if it feels right to you. There is no wrong answer here. A fitted look that celebrates the bump fully is just as beautiful as a flowy gown that drapes softly over it. The images should feel like you.
How far along should I be for maternity photos?
The sweet spot is 28 to 36 weeks. Your bump is beautifully pronounced, you still have energy for a session, and you have not yet reached the final stage of physical discomfort. If you are expecting multiples, aim for 26 to 30 weeks.
What should my partner wear for maternity photos?
Your partner’s outfit should support yours, not compete with it. Build their look around your palette. Dark jeans or chinos with a simple button-down or linen shirt works for almost every maternity session style.
Can I wear regular clothes for maternity photos?
Absolutely. Separates and everyday-elevated pieces can create stunning, personal maternity images. The key is keeping the palette cohesive and making sure each piece fits well and moves comfortably.
What should I NOT wear for maternity photos?
Avoid clothes that pull or gap across the bump, horizontal stripes, fabrics that wrinkle badly, uncomfortable shoes, and anything brand new that has never been worn. Comfort and confidence will always show up on camera.
Where can I find maternity photo dresses in Northern Virginia?
Bellies and Babies in Alexandria does maternity dress rentals and consignment. Mela at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda carries boutique and designer maternity pieces. Free People in Georgetown has beautiful flowy options. Online, PinkBlush, Sew Trendy, and BHLDN are my most-recommended sources. And of course, my client closet is always an option.
What is a client closet and how does it work?
A client closet is a curated collection of gowns, dresses, and separates that I offer clients to borrow for their session at no extra cost. You mention it on our consult call, we talk through what will work for your coloring and vision, and your outfit is handled. It is one of my favorite ways to take something off a mama’s plate.
How many outfits should I bring to a maternity session?
Most sessions work beautifully with one or two outfits. If you want more than two, mention it on your consult call and we can build the timeline to accommodate it. I would rather you have one outfit that feels completely right than three that feel rushed.

As a mom myself, I know what it means to be at this stage of pregnancy. The anticipation, the tenderness, the way everything feels both enormous and incredibly fleeting. Maternity sessions exist because this time deserves to be preserved with the care and beauty it carries.
I photograph maternity sessions all across Northern Virginia, from open fields and wooded trails in Loudoun and Fairfax County to Old Town Alexandria, the DC waterfront, and the private estates of the Virginia countryside. My sessions are a blend of guided poses and real, quiet moments, because I want your images to feel like you actually lived them.
Maternity booking windows are short by nature. If you are in the 24 to 30 week range right now, this is the moment to reach out.
Book your free consult call here! We will talk through your vision, your timeline, your location ideas, and yes, your outfit. And if you want to use the client closet, we will sort that out together too.
