The colors you choose for your outfits should coordinate with each other, as well as any props or backgrounds in the photos. If you love the idea of a newborn photo shoot at home, I would suggest you take your wall colors and home decor into consideration.

Neutral colors typically work well, especially if your home features a lot of prints and patterns. If your home is lacking some accents, adding prints or patterns in, for example, mom’s dress could be really nice. If you love the idea of a natural light studio session, bold colors may not be your best choice. Neutrals and subtle patterns are the way to go!

When selecting colors for your newborn photo shoot, keep your home setting in mind. This is especially important if you plan to hang your gorgeous images. Not only will this ensure that your photos look great in their frames, but it will also make them look cohesive with the decor of your home.

When to Schedule Your Newborn Photo Shoot

One of the most common questions I hear from new parents is: when is the best time to book a newborn photo shoot? The short answer is as early as possible, ideally during your second trimester, before baby arrives.

In terms of timing the session itself, the sweet spot for newborn photography is within the first 5 to 14 days after birth. During this window, babies tend to sleep more deeply and curl naturally into those adorable, sleepy poses that make newborn portraits so magical. After the two-week mark, babies become more alert and harder to settle, which can make posing more challenging.

A few things to keep in mind when scheduling:

• Book your session before your due date. Babies have their own timeline, and you don’t want to scramble to find availability after your little one arrives.
• Build in flexibility. I always recommend keeping a couple of days open on either side of your due date in case of early or late arrivals.
• Plan around feeding times. A fed, sleepy baby makes for the smoothest newborn photo shoot experience. We’ll time the session to work with your baby’s natural rhythm as much as possible.

What to Expect During Your Newborn Photo Shoot

If this is your first newborn photography session, you may be wondering what the experience actually looks like from start to finish. Here’s a general overview of what a typical session includes so you can feel relaxed and prepared on the day.

How long does a newborn photo shoot take? 

Most newborn sessions run between 2 to 4 hours. This might sound like a lot, but it’s completely normal. Babies need time to be fed, soothed, repositioned, and sometimes calmed back to sleep between setups. Rushing a newborn session never produces the best results, patience is part of the process, and I build plenty of it into every appointment.

What happens during the session?

• We’ll start with family and sibling portraits while everyone is fresh and alert
• We’ll move into individual newborn poses, working through a variety of wraps, props, and setups
• The session wraps up with any remaining combination shots of parents with baby

What should you bring?

• A change of clothes for mom and dad (in case of any baby-related surprises!)
• Your baby’s favorite pacifier if they use one, it’s incredibly helpful for soothing between poses
• A swaddle or blanket from home if there’s one your baby finds comforting
• Snacks and drinks for the parents, you’ll be there a while!

What’s the studio environment like? 

My studio is kept warm and cozy, much warmer than a typical room, because newborns are most settled when they’re snug and comfortable. I recommend dressing in light layers so you stay comfortable too. The atmosphere is calm, unhurried, and designed to make both babies and parents feel completely at ease.
