Your newborn photo shoot is one of the most special milestones you’ll ever capture and choosing the right outfits plays a huge role in how your images turn out. The right colors and patterns can make your newborn photography look timeless and cohesive. As a professional newborn photographer in Northern Virginia, here are my top tips for dressing your family for your session.

The colors you choose for your outfits should coordinate with each other, as well as any props or backgrounds in the photos. If you love the idea of a newborn photo shoot at home, I would suggest you take your wall colors and home decor into consideration.
Neutral colors typically work well, especially if your home features a lot of prints and patterns. If your home is lacking some accents, adding prints or patterns in, for example, mom’s dress could be really nice. If you love the idea of a natural light studio session, bold colors may not be your best choice. Neutrals and subtle patterns are the way to go!

When selecting colors for your newborn photo shoot, keep your home setting in mind. This is especially important if you plan to hang your gorgeous images. Offering custom framing, I want to be certain that the frames work well with the wall colors in your home. Not only will this ensure that your photos look great in their frames, but it will also make them look cohesive with the decor of your home.
One of the most common questions I hear from new parents is: when is the best time to book a newborn photo shoot? The short answer is as early as possible, ideally during your second trimester, before baby arrives.
In terms of timing the session itself, the sweet spot for newborn photography is within the first 5 to 14 days after birth. During this window, babies tend to sleep more deeply and curl naturally into those adorable, sleepy poses that make newborn portraits so magical. After the two-week mark, babies become more alert and harder to settle, which can make posing more challenging.
A few things to keep in mind when scheduling:
If this is your first newborn photography session, you may be wondering what the experience actually looks like from start to finish. Here’s a general overview of what a typical session includes so you can feel relaxed and prepared on the day.
Most newborn sessions run between 2 to 4 hours. This might sound like a lot, but it’s completely normal. Babies need time to be fed, soothed, repositioned, and sometimes calmed back to sleep between setups. Rushing a newborn session never produces the best results, patience is part of the process, and I build plenty of it into every appointment.
My studio is kept warm and cozy, much warmer than a typical room, because newborns are most settled when they’re snug and comfortable. I recommend dressing in light layers so you stay comfortable too. The atmosphere is calm, unhurried, and designed to make both babies and parents feel completely at ease.
As a professional newborn photographer in Northern Virginia, I am proud to offer a curated client closet for moms and newborns. The dresses in the featured images are examples of what’s available to you. I also offer style boards with shopable links to the clothing options suggested. A pre-consultation helps me figure out what exactly you are envisioning to make the best decision for your newborn photo shoot.

Figuring out what to wear for your newborn photo shoot shouldn’t be stressful. As long as everyone is dressed comfortably and coordinated according to the color palette and theme, you’ll have no problem getting great shots during your photo session!
If you’re having trouble choosing the right outfits, I’d love to help! As your Northern Virginia newborn photographer, I’m here to guide you in the right direction.

How much does a newborn photo shoot cost?
Newborn photography investment varies depending on the photographer, location, and what’s included in the package. My sessions include a pre-consultation, access to my client wardrobe, and a curated gallery of professionally edited images. Contact me for current pricing and package details.
Where should I have my newborn photo shoot: at home or in a studio?
Both options produce beautiful results, and the best choice really comes down to your personal style and preference. An in-home newborn photo shoot has a warm, lifestyle feel and incorporates your family’s natural surroundings. A studio session gives you more control over lighting and backgrounds, with a clean, timeless aesthetic. I offer both, and I’m happy to help you decide which is the right fit during your pre-consultation.
How long until I receive my photos?
Edited galleries are typically delivered within two to three weeks of your newborn photo shoot. I take time with every image to ensure the final result is something you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
Do I need to do anything to prepare my baby before the session?
The most helpful thing you can do is keep your baby awake for an hour or so before the session so they’re ready for a long, deep sleep once we get started. Arriving with a freshly fed baby makes a huge difference. I’ll send you a full preparation guide after you book so you know exactly what to expect.

This my favorite type of newborn shoot. Clean, simple, and full of authenticity and joy. Amazing smiley baby just before “wrapping up” – so cute.
Such great info on what to wear for newborn sessions, Stephanie! I agree that neutral colors are always an easy win. Beautiful images, as always!
