During your in-home fall newborn session, I will find the spot in your home where that golden hour glow lands best, whether that is your nursery window, your living room, or the corner of your bedroom you never expected to be photo-worthy.
Fall Newborn Photo Outfit Ideas
Fall is one of the easiest seasons to dress a newborn for, because the colors and textures of the season do most of the work. A few of my favorite looks for this time of year:
- Cream or oatmeal knit rompers, which photograph beautifully against warm wood tones and soft blankets
- Simple footed layettes in rust, mustard, or deep sage, pulled straight from the season’s palette
- Chunky knit wraps and bonnets, which add texture without pulling focus from baby’s face
- Classic diaper cover and headband sets for a timeless, undressed look that never feels dated

- Baby nestled into mom or dad’s arms while they are wearing cozy, seasonal layers

We do not need to plan every single pose in advance. I bring years of experience posing and settling newborns safely, and a big part of session day is simply following baby’s lead.

Mom’s outfit sets the tone for a lot of the session, especially for the images where you are holding baby skin to skin or wrapped in your arms. For fall, I usually recommend:
- Soft, solid colored gowns or button-downs in neutral or muted tones, which layer beautifully with baby’s outfit
- Simple knit sweaters in cream, camel, or dusty rose
- Avoiding busy patterns or logos, which tend to compete with baby in photographs

Fall Newborn Photo Session Ideas with Siblings and Pets

With an Older Sibling
Some of the sweetest fall images come from letting a sibling be a sibling, not posing them into something stiff. A few of my favorites to build into a session:
- Big brother or sister curled up next to baby on the bed or in a favorite reading chair, especially if there is a book involved to keep little hands busy and focused
- A close-up of small and tiny hands together, siblings’ hands wrapped around baby’s fingers or feet
- Sibling proudly holding baby with a parent close by and ready to help, capturing that mix of pride and nervousness that comes with a new title like big brother or big sister
- A candid moment of sibling showing baby their room, a favorite stuffed animal, or a toy they picked out just for them
- If sibling has a cozy fall sweater or their own knit set, coordinating loosely with baby’s outfit adds a nice visual thread without looking matchy
Siblings do not need to hold a pose for long. I work quickly and follow their energy, which usually means the best images happen in the moments right before or after we ask for a smile.
With the Family Dog or Pet
Pets have a way of becoming full members of the family in photographs, especially fall ones with all that cozy texture around them. A few ideas that tend to work beautifully:
- Pet curled up next to baby’s bassinet or moses basket, especially if they already have a favorite spot in the nursery
- A parent holding baby with the family dog resting against their leg or looking up at them, which usually happens naturally without much direction
- Close-up detail shots of a pet’s paw or nose near baby’s hand, a small moment that says a lot about how the family already feels complete
- If your pet is fall-ready with a seasonal bandana or sweater, that little touch of texture and color plays well against the rest of the palette
Pets are unpredictable, which is part of what makes these images so genuine. I never force a pet into a shot. Instead, I watch for the natural moments and stay ready to capture them.
