If you’re searching for fall newborn photos ideas and you live in Northern Virgina, you’ve come to the right place!
There is something about a baby arriving in the fall that feels almost storybook. The light gets softer, the air turns crisp, and everything about the season leans toward slowing down and staying home, which happens to be exactly what a newborn session should feel like too.
As a newborn photographer in Northern Virginia, I photograph newborns all year long, but fall sessions have a particular kind of magic. The afternoon light comes in low and golden through the windows. Sweaters and knit blankets are already part of the season, so they show up naturally in the images instead of feeling styled.
Whether you are drawn to soft indoor portraits or want a few images out in the color of the season, fall gives us a lot to work with. Here’s some ideas depending on what type of newborn session you’re interested in.

ToggleFall light is some of the best light of the year to photograph in. It is warmer and gentler than summer sun, and it pours into a home differently once the trees start to thin out. During your in-home fall newborn session, I will find the spot in your home where that golden hour glow lands best, whether that is your nursery window, your living room, or the corner of your bedroom you never expected to be photo-worthy.

Fall is one of the easiest seasons to dress a newborn for, because the colors and textures of the season do most of the work. A few of my favorite looks for this time of year:
If you are working with me for a Signature Session, you will also have access to my client closet, so you do not need to buy or borrow a single outfit unless you want to.

Some of my favorite fall newborn images are not really poses at all, they are quiet, natural moments captured in good light. A few looks I love building into a fall session:
We do not need to plan every single pose in advance. I bring years of experience posing and settling newborns safely, and a big part of session day is simply following baby’s lead.
Mom’s outfit sets the tone for a lot of the session, especially for the images where you are holding baby skin to skin or wrapped in your arms. For fall, I usually recommend:
We will talk through your options together on our consultation call, so you never have to guess what will photograph well.

If you are booking a Signature Session for your fall newborn photos, you are getting a full-service experience from start to finish.
That includes access to my client closet for both baby and mom’s wardrobe, complimentary professional hair and makeup at your home, and newborn session planning so the day feels calm instead of rushed. We also talk through your space and outfit options together during your consultation call, so nothing is left to figure out on the spot.
If you would rather keep things simple, a Simplicity Session is also available and focuses on beautiful, natural portraits without the added styling elements. You can compare both session types on the Investment page to see which fits your family best.
These moments tend to become the images families love most looking back. You can see this play out beautifully in [Amelia’s First Year Collective story], where her family’s dog Arnie made his own appearance in nearly every session.

Some of the sweetest fall images come from letting a sibling be a sibling, not posing them into something stiff. A few of my favorites to build into a session:
Siblings do not need to hold a pose for long. I work quickly and follow their energy, which usually means the best images happen in the moments right before or after we ask for a smile.

Pets have a way of becoming full members of the family in photographs, especially fall ones with all that cozy texture around them. A few ideas that tend to work beautifully:
Pets are unpredictable, which is part of what makes these images so genuine. I never force a pet into a shot. Instead, I watch for the natural moments and stay ready to capture them.

When is the best time to book a fall newborn photo session?
Newborn sessions are typically scheduled within the first one to two weeks after birth, so I recommend reaching out while you are still pregnant to reserve your fall date in advance.
Do fall newborn photo sessions have to be outdoors?
Not at all. Most of my fall sessions happen primarily indoors in your home, using natural window light. Outdoor images are simply an option if your family wants them.
What should we wear for a fall newborn photo session?
Soft neutrals, knits, and layered textures work beautifully for fall. If you book a Signature Session, you will have access to my client closet for both baby and mom’s wardrobe, so you do not have to shop for a thing.
Can we include our older kids or pets in the session?
Yes, family and pets are always welcome to be part of your newborn session. Many of my favorite fall images include an older sibling meeting the baby for the first time.
What is the difference between a Signature Session and a Simplicity Session?
A Signature Session includes full-service extras like the client closet, complimentary hair and makeup, and an in-home light walkthrough. A Simplicity Session offers the same expert care with a more streamlined experience. You can see a full comparison on the Investment page.
Do you offer outfit options for mom?
Yes! client’s get access to my Client Closet which includes a wide variety of gowns and dresses for moms in many different styles and sizes. Looking for some thing new to own? Kindred Bravely has many options as well.
