There is something so special about those first few weeks with a new baby—the tiny fingers and toes, sleepy expressions, and little details that seem to change almost overnight. As a Leesburg VA newborn photographer, one of my favorite parts of my job is giving families a chance to slow down and preserve all of those details while also making the experience as easy as possible for new parents.
For this sweet family, their newborn session was also the beginning of their First Year Collective, which means I’ll have the opportunity to photograph their baby two more times throughout his first year. I love knowing that this session is just the first chapter and that I’ll get to watch him grow!

ToggleWe photographed their newborn session in my Leesburg studio, where everything could move at baby’s pace.
Newborn sessions are intentionally unhurried. There is time for feeding, changing, soothing, snuggling, or simply taking a break whenever baby needs one. My goal as a Leesburg VA newborn photographer is never to get through a checklist of photographs as quickly as possible. I want parents to be able to relax and actually enjoy this experience with their new baby.
Afterward, Mom shared:
“The actual session was such a wonderful experience too. We never once felt rushed. Everything was calm, relaxing, and fun, & Stephanie made us feel completely at ease…I think we laughed more than anything.”
And that is exactly how I want a newborn session to feel.

One of my favorite parts of this session actually happened because Mom originally didn’t want to be photographed.
That feeling is incredibly common after having a baby. You’re recovering, you’re tired, your body feels different, and being in front of a camera may be the very last thing you feel like doing.
But these photographs aren’t only for you right now. Someday, they will also be for your child.
Mom decided to trust me and get into the photographs. We arranged professional hair and makeup as part of her First Year Collective experience, and she chose a dress from my client wardrobe that helped her feel comfortable and beautiful.
She later wrote:
“Stephanie encouraged me to be a part of them, helped me have my hair and makeup done…and even helped me choose a dress from her collection that made me feel beautiful and confident. I am very grateful she did because the photos of me with my baby are reaaaalllyyy cute.”
I couldn’t agree more.
This is one of the reasons I offer a client wardrobe and professional hair and makeup with my First Year Collective. You shouldn’t have to spend the weeks before your newborn session worrying about what to wear, shopping for a dress, or figuring out how to feel photo-ready while caring for a brand-new baby.
I want to take those things off your plate.

One of Mom’s biggest priorities was documenting the details she knew wouldn’t stay this tiny for long.
Little hands. Tiny feet. His features and expressions. All of the things you study during those early days and wish you could somehow remember forever.
She told me how important those photographs were to her, so we made sure to intentionally capture them throughout the session.
“I wanted all of those tiny newborn details captured — the little hands, feet, features, expressions, and all of the things you know are going to change way too quickly — and she captured them so beautifully.”
Every newborn session is a little different because every family values something different. Part of my job is listening before and during your session so that the final gallery doesn’t just contain beautiful newborn portraits—it feels like your baby and your family.

The experience didn’t end when their studio session was over.
Once their photographs were fully edited, I came to their home for their ordering appointment so we could look through the images together and decide which ones they wanted to preserve.
Mom admitted that the hardest part was narrowing them down because she loved practically every photograph—which is a pretty good problem to have!
This part of the process is important to me because I don’t want my families to receive a gallery and then be left wondering what to do with their photographs. Whether we’re designing custom framed artwork for the walls or creating an heirloom album, I help with the process from beginning to end.
These photographs deserve to become more than images sitting on a phone or computer.
One of the things I’m most excited about is that I’ll get to see this little guy again.
His family chose my First Year Collective, which allows us to document multiple milestones throughout baby’s first year instead of trying to fit an entire year of change into one session.
Mom shared:
“We ended up purchasing the First Year Collective, and after this experience, we are already SO excited for our next two sessions with her and to have Stephanie capture our baby as he grows throughout his first year.”
And I’m just as excited.
By their next session, he’ll already look completely different. As the year goes on, we’ll get to document new expressions, developing personality, sitting, interacting with Mom and Dad, and eventually celebrating just how much he’s grown.
At the end of it all, they’ll have more than photographs from separate sessions. They’ll have the story of his first year.

If you’re expecting and searching for a Leesburg VA newborn photographer, my goal is to give you more than beautiful photographs. I want the entire experience to feel easy, comfortable, and personal—especially during a season when you already have plenty on your plate.
Newborn sessions can take place in-studio here in Leesburg or in the comfort of your own home throughout Northern Virginia. I provide guidance with wardrobe, access to my client closet, gentle and baby-led newborn posing, and help turning your favorite photographs into custom artwork for your home.
And if you’re considering staying out of the pictures because you don’t feel quite ready to be photographed yet, I’ll leave you with Mom’s advice:
“BOOK THE SESSION — and get in the pictures, even if you think you don’t want to. I am so thankful Stephanie encouraged me to.”
Your baby won’t remember whether you felt camera-ready.
But one day, they’ll get to see just how you held them when they were this small.
