When families are looking for a Leesburg VA studio newborn photographer, they’re often hoping for more than beautiful portraits. They want someone who understands that life with a newborn can feel wonderfully overwhelming—especially when there are toddlers involved. The Robinson family reminded me exactly why I love what I do. With the arrival of sweet baby Adam, they officially became a family of five…with three little boys all under the age of three.
If that sounds like a busy season, it absolutely is. But it also deserves to be remembered.
Watching this family grow over the years has been such a privilege, and meeting baby Adam was the perfect way to continue telling their story. Despite all the joyful chaos that naturally comes with three tiny boys, their session felt relaxed, genuine, and filled with so much love.

ToggleOne of the questions I receive most often is, “When should we schedule our newborn session?”
The best time to reserve your newborn session is actually during your second trimester, or early in your third trimester. Booking before baby arrives allows me to reserve space around your due date while keeping flexibility for whenever your little one decides to make their grand entrance.
Newborn sessions are typically photographed between 5 and 18 days after your due date. During this stage, babies are generally sleepier, naturally curl into those sweet newborn poses, and haven’t yet become as alert or stretched out.
For the Robinson’s, we intentionally scheduled Adam’s newborn session about two weeks after he was born. It gave mom, dad, and the boys a little extra time to settle into their new routine before coming into the studio. Every family is different, and my goal is always to create a timeline that works for your family while still capturing those beautiful newborn details.
Of course, babies don’t always follow the calendar—and that’s perfectly okay. Every family who books with me is scheduled based on their due date first, and once baby arrives, we simply adjust the session date accordingly.
That flexibility removes one more thing from your already full plate.

One of my favorite parts of offering a full-service experience is arranging for professional hair and makeup to come directly to my clients’ homes on the morning of their session.
For moms recovering from childbirth, even getting everyone out the door can feel like a major accomplishment.
Instead of rushing to a salon with a newborn—or trying to get ready while juggling feedings, diaper changes, and toddlers—a professional artist arrives at your home so you can simply sit back, relax, and enjoy a little time being cared for.
For Adam’s newborn session, mom was pampered by Monica of Beauty Nova Studio, someone she has trusted with her hair and makeup for several of our sessions we have done together. Having a familiar face come to her home that morning made the experience feel even more relaxing and allowed her to ease into the day feeling confident and cared for.
By the time the Robinson family arrived at the studio, mom looked absolutely beautiful and, even more importantly, felt confident and ready to simply enjoy the morning with her family. It’s one of those small details that makes a big difference.

Many parents worry that their toddler won’t cooperate during a newborn session. The truth? Almost every parent feels that way.
Toddlers are unpredictable, and that’s exactly why newborn sessions are designed with plenty of flexibility. We follow their lead, take breaks when needed, and never expect perfection.
While I always create timeless, carefully posed portraits, I also leave space for genuine interactions to unfold naturally. Some of the most meaningful images come from a spontaneous hug, a curious glance at baby brother, or a shared laugh between siblings.
By blending gentle direction with those unscripted moments, we’re able to create a gallery that feels both polished and authentic.

If your newborn session includes toddlers or preschool-aged children, here’s one piece of advice I always recommend:
Bring a helping hand.
Whether it’s a grandparent, trusted friend, or babysitter, having an extra adult available can completely change the pace of your session.
Young children usually do wonderfully for the family portraits at the beginning of the session. Once we’ve captured those images, they’re often ready for a snack, a walk, or a trip to the park while we finish photographing the baby.
That’s exactly what the Robinson family did.
Having someone available to entertain the older boys allowed mom and dad to relax and gave us uninterrupted time to create all of baby’s individual portraits without feeling rushed. It’s one of the simplest ways to make the entire experience more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Whether you’re welcoming your first baby or your third, my goal is to make your newborn session as effortless as possible.
From professional hair and makeup delivered to your home, access to my curated client wardrobe, and a warm, comfortable studio, to gentle posing and timeless artwork for your home, every detail is designed so you can simply enjoy these fleeting first days with your baby.
