I’m so excited to share this in-home DC newborn photography session featuring baby Oliver and his family.
When Susie reached out to me about an in-home DC newborn photography session in Washington, DC, baby Oliver was already two weeks old. With her husband John’s limited schedule, finding a time that worked for everyone required a bit of flexibility. Most photographers would have said it wasn’t possible. I made it work, and it turned into one of the most meaningful sessions of the year: a Father’s Day newborn session, captured right in the home where this new family was just beginning to find its rhythm.

Susie reached out to me when Oliver was nearly two weeks old, placing them right at the end of the ideal window for newborn photography. Booking your newborn session ahead of time is important if you’re envisioning a more styled session with specific newborn poses.
I always encourage DC-area families to book their new photography session while they’re still pregnant, ideally by the second trimester, so we can lock in the best timing once the baby arrives. I cover exactly why timing makes such a difference, and how to plan around your due date, in my full guide to the best time to schedule your newborn session.
Because John’s schedule left almost no room to maneuver, I did everything I could to fit this family in quickly. It worked out beautifully this time, and I’m always going to try for families in this position. But I can’t always accommodate last-minute requests, especially on weekends, when my calendar fills up fast. The earlier you reach out, even before the baby arrives, the more flexibility we’ll have to find the right day together.

This in-home DC newborn photography session started before I ever walked through the door. My stylist Monica began hair and makeup in the family’s home at 6 a.m., since she had other appointments booked later that same morning. I’ll admit, a 6 a.m. start felt early to me too, but as any new parent already up for middle-of-the-night feedings will tell you, it barely registered for Susie. When you’re adjusting to life with a newborn, an early morning is just another morning.
I arrived at their Washington DC home at 10 a.m. Oliver was awake and alert, which gave us a great head start. We walked through outfit choices together, and Susie gave me a tour of the home so we could decide where the light, and the story, would come together best.

While Susie changed into her outfits, I photographed the small details that make an in-home session so personal: the nursery, the little touches this family had chosen for Oliver’s space, the quiet corners that only mean something to them. Every in-home session I shoot is different because every home is different, and that’s exactly the point.
The best natural light in their home turned out to be in the master bedroom, so that’s where the majority of Oliver’s session took place. He was calm and relaxed almost the entire time, an easygoing little redhead with the kind of cheeks you can’t stop photographing. He drifted off to sleep partway through, giving us some of my favorite quiet, sleepy newborn images from the whole session.
When Oliver was due for a bottle, we moved into the nursery so Susie could feed him in the space built just for him, and I was able to capture that feeding moment as part of his story too. Altogether, the session ran about two hours, which is fairly typical for an in-home newborn session once you factor in styling changes, feeding breaks, and simply letting the baby set the pace.
An in-home newborn session takes place in your own home, using your own nursery, bedroom, and personal touches as the backdrop. Sessions typically run one and a half to two hours and move at your baby’s pace, with breaks built in for feeding, soothing, and outfit changes. Because the home is already familiar and comfortable, babies often settle more easily than they would in an unfamiliar studio space.

This in-home DC newborn photography session happened to fall on Father’s Day, which made it even more special. Fitting this family in on such short notice meant John got to spend part of his very first Father’s Day being fully present with his new son, with no work obligations pulling him away. Getting to help a new dad celebrate a milestone like that, in the middle of an already overwhelming and beautiful season of life, is exactly why I love doing this work.
I loved every minute with Susie, John, and Oliver, and I’m so glad we found a way to make this Washington DC newborn session happen when it mattered most.

Every newborn stage lasts such a short window, and I never want a family to miss it because they weren’t sure when to reach out. If you’re expecting or newly home with your baby, the best time to get in touch is now, even if your due date is still months away. Booking early means we can lock in a tentative date and stay flexible together as your timeline comes into focus, so you’re never left scrambling the way Susie and John nearly were.
Whether you’re picturing a session in your own home, like Oliver’s, or want to talk through what an in-home newborn session in Washington DC could look like for your family, I’d love to help you plan it. Reach out today, and let’s create a newborn session as unique as your story.

I recommend booking while you’re still pregnant, ideally in your second trimester, so we can pencil in a tentative date and stay flexible once baby arrives. Newborn sessions are best captured within the first two weeks of life, while babies are still sleepy and curl into those classic newborn poses most easily.
I do my best to fit families in when I can, especially when the baby is already at the recommended age for newborn photos. That said, my calendar fills quickly, particularly on weekends, so last-minute availability is never guaranteed. Booking early is always the safest way to secure your date.
We’ll walk through your home together to choose the best light and locations, go over outfit choices, and photograph details specific to your family, like the nursery. Sessions move at your baby’s pace, with breaks for feeding and soothing, and typically last about two hours.
