I’m so excited to share Amelia’s Alexandria newborn photography experience and the beautiful way her story unfolded throughout her first year. From sleepy newborn snuggles to a joyful first birthday cake smash, each session captured a new stage of her growing personality.
A year goes by in a blink, and nowhere is that more obvious than in the space between a newborn session and a first birthday smash cake!
When Jocelyn and Kelton welcomed their daughter Amelia, they chose to join The First Year Collective so every stage of that first year, not just the newborn days, would be preserved.
Now that the year has come full circle, I wanted to look back at how it all unfolded, from tiny fingers and curled up snuggles to a walking, giggling, cake-covered one-year-old.

If you missed it, I first photographed this beautiful family in the comfort of their Alexandria home with their mini doodle Arnie making his own appearance in the portraits. You can read the full story in Amelia’s original newborn session post here.
It was during our very first consultation that Jocelyn decided to join The First Year Collective. She knew right away that she wanted more than a single newborn photography session, she wanted every stage of Amelia’s first year remembered, not just the very beginning. That decision meant this newborn session was only chapter one of a much bigger story.

The First Year Collective includes 3 or 4 Signature Sessions scheduled across baby’s first year, along with priority booking, savings on creative fees, complimentary professional hair and makeup when desired, a $200 album incentive at each ordering appointment, and a complimentary smash cake to celebrate baby’s first birthday.
That first session captured the newborn bliss and we spent the morning documenting Amelia in the soft natural light of their home, with Arnie curiously checking in throughout. These newborn portraits become the artwork you’ll return to over and over again as your baby grows.

Amelia’s seven-month milestone session took place on a gorgeous warm fall Saturday, right at their home in Alexandria. Heidi, the same stylist from Amelia’s newborn session, came to pamper mom with hair and makeup. Whenever possible, I pair families with the same stylist throughout their First Year Collective experience. Not only does it create a consistent look across each session, but it also allows genuine relationships to develop, making every appointment feel even more comfortable and familiar. This also makes your newborn photography experience so special.

Amelia was teething and had a bit of a rough patch during the session, but she still gave us plenty of smiles and sweet, genuine moments in between. Sessions like this are a good reminder of why patience matters so much in this work. Rushing a baby who’s having a hard day never gets you the real moment, but slowing down and following her lead usually does.

We built in time to play and read together, including a book personalized with Amelia’s own name, which gave us a mix of posed portraits and candid, genuine ones. With their backyard full of beautiful fall color, we captured a variety of both indoor and outdoor images that really reflect that specific, golden season of her first year.
Amelia’s first birthday session brought us right back to their home on a Saturday in April, with Heidi once again doing hair and makeup on-site. I also brought a smash cake along to celebrate the milestone in the most delicious way possible.

We started with images inside their home, and this time Amelia was walking. She shared lots of smiles and her personality was on full display: silly, a little sneaky, and every bit as reserved and sweet as she needed to be. It was also clear how attached she is to her daddy, and that bond came through beautifully in so many of the images.
She was definitely a fan of her smash cake, though by the end of the session she was getting tired, which is exactly the kind of real, honest moment that makes a first birthday session feel true to life rather than staged.

Looking back at Amelia’s year, from a two-week-old newborn curled up in the nursery to a walking, cake-smashing one-year-old with her own distinct personality, it’s easy to see why families choose The First Year Collective.
So much changes in twelve months. The way a baby holds their head up, the way they laugh, the way they snuggle with mom and dad, all of it shifts so quickly that it’s easy to forget just how much happened in between the big milestones.

Joining the Collective early meant Jocelyn and Kelton didn’t have to choose which moments mattered most. They got the newborn snuggles, the teething-but-still-smiling seven-month session, and the walking, smiling, thoroughly tired-by-the-end first birthday, all documented with the same care and the same stylist, start to finish. The First Year Collective offers a newborn photography experience you’ll cherish for years to come.
Here’s what the client had to say:

To Jocelyn, Kelton, Amelia, and Arnie: thank you for trusting me with an entire year of your family’s story. Watching Amelia grow from those first sleepy newborn days into a walking, giggling one-year-old with so much personality has been such an honor, and I can’t wait to see what her next chapter of milestones looks like.
It’s a newborn photography experience designed to tell the full story of your baby’s first year, from those tiny, sleepy beginnings to the smiles, milestones, and growing personality that emerge along the way.
Because the first year passes quickly, but the photographs let you hold onto it forever.
The First Year Collective is a membership-style package that includes 3 or 4 Signature Sessions scheduled throughout your baby’s first year, along with priority booking, creative fee savings, complimentary hair and makeup when desired, an album incentive at each ordering appointment, and a complimentary smash cake for the first birthday session. It’s a newborn photography experience that ensures all those first year milestones are captured forever.
I recommend booking your newborn session while you’re still pregnant, then working together to schedule your remaining milestone sessions, often around six to nine months and again near the first birthday, so each stage of that first year is captured as it happens.

A seven-month session usually includes a mix of posed and candid moments, often incorporating play, reading, or other natural interactions, along with both indoor and outdoor images depending on the season and your home’s setting.
Yes. First birthday sessions as part of the First Year Collective include a complimentary smash cake, along with portraits capturing your baby’s growing personality at one year old.
