When should you schedule your newborn photo session? If you’re pregnant and expecting a new little one sometime soon, congratulations! One of the most exciting things about welcoming a new baby is getting newborn photos done. It’s a great way to capture those early weeks and months when your baby is so small and sweet. But when is the best time to schedule your newborn photo session? Keep reading for some tips on when to book your session.

Book Your Newborn Photo Session After the 12-week Mark

Ideally, you’ll want to book your newborn photo session sometime after the 12-week mark of pregnancy. As a Northern Virginia newborn photographer, I only take on a handful of clients each month to ensure that each client receives the time, attention, and care they deserve. Unfortunately, that means that dates can fill up fast.

So, if you’re thinking about getting newborn photos done, it’s best to book sooner rather than later. Plus, this gives you enough time to prep and plan for your newborn photoshoot. If you have specific ideas or props that you want to use, I can help make them a reality. And if you’re looking for inspiration, I have plenty of resources and ideas to get you started.

While you may not know the exact date of your baby’s birth, booking your newborn photo session around the 12-week mark will give you a window of time to work with. Of course, we can always adjust the date if your little one arrives early or late. So, don’t worry if you’re not sure of the exact date. We can work around it!

Choose The Right Age To Capture Newborn Photos

The best time to book your newborn photo session is when your baby is between 5-18 days old. This is when they’re still sleepy and curled up like they were in the womb. This makes it easier to get those cute posed shots that you see in my portfolio. If your baby is older than 15 days, we can still get some beautiful photos, but they may not be as ” posed.” And that’s okay! Whatever age your baby is, we will work together to capture their personality and create beautiful memories of their tiny details, such as their toes, hands, and lips.

Newborn Photo Session: Lifestyle Vs. Posed Newborn Photos

When you book a newborn session with me, you can do a lifestyle session in your home with a few posed shots or come into my studio.

Lifestyle sessions are more relaxed and natural. I’ll come to your home and photograph you and your family in your everyday environment. These sessions are perfect for capturing all the little details of new parenthood and your baby’s first days and weeks at home. We’ll also capture a few classic posed shots.

If you prefer a more traditional newborn session, we can do that too! I have a cozy and comfortable studio where we can focus on getting those cute, classic newborn photos. We’ll use props and blankets to help position your baby and get a variety of different looks.

Both types of sessions have their own unique benefits, so it really just comes down to what you’re looking for. If you’re unsure, we can always chat about it and figure out the best option for your newborn session.
