Those first few weeks with a new baby can feel like a blur. You’re adjusting to a completely new rhythm, running on less sleep, and soaking in a season that somehow feels both incredibly full and incredibly fleeting.

The last thing you may want to do is pack a diaper bag, get everyone dressed, load your newborn into the car, and make your way to a photography studio.

That’s one of the reasons I love offering in-home newborn photography throughout Northern Virginia. Instead of asking you to come to me, I bring the newborn photography experience to you.

Your home doesn’t need to look like it belongs in a magazine. You don’t need a perfectly decorated nursery or an abundance of natural light. And you definitely don’t need to clean every room before I arrive.

You simply get to stay home with your baby while I take care of the rest.

Your In-Home Newborn Photography Experience in Northern Virginia

In-home newborn photography sessions are designed to feel relaxed and unhurried.

When I arrive, I’ll take a quick look around your home and determine which areas will photograph best. I’m looking for beautiful light, neutral spaces, and places that will help tell the story of your family—not whether your house is perfectly tidy.

We may photograph in your primary bedroom, nursery, living room, or another small area with beautiful light. Sometimes a simple corner near a window is all we need.

One of the biggest misconceptions about in-home newborn photography is that you need a large, beautifully designed home.

You don’t.

I’ve photographed families in all kinds of spaces throughout Northern Virginia. My job is to find the light and angles that allow the focus to remain exactly where it belongs: on your baby and your family.

A Mix of Lifestyle and Posed Newborn Portraits

Choosing an in-home session doesn’t mean you have to choose between lifestyle photographs and those sweet, timeless newborn portraits.

I love incorporating both.

We may begin with your family snuggled together on the bed, Mom holding baby near the nursery window, Dad cuddling his newborn in the rocking chair, or older siblings climbing up beside everyone for a family photograph.

These lifestyle images capture what this season actually felt like in the place where so much of your everyday life is happening.

But I also bring what I need to create more polished, gently posed newborn portraits in your home.

That means you can have photographs of your baby curled up peacefully on their own, those tiny details you never want to forget, and beautiful images of your newborn in your arms—without sacrificing the personal feeling of an at-home session.

My approach is always baby-led. We stop when your baby needs to eat, be changed, or simply needs a little extra time in Mom or Dad’s arms. There is no pressure to rush through a shot list.

Yes, Your Dog Can Be in Your Newborn Photos

One of my favorite parts about photographing newborn sessions at home is how naturally we can include the furry members of the family.

For many of my clients, their dog was their first baby.

Having your newborn session at home means your pet is already in an environment where they feel comfortable. We can bring them into a few family photographs without the added logistics of taking them somewhere unfamiliar.

And sometimes the most meaningful photograph ends up being the one with your newborn in your arms and your dog curled up beside you.

These photographs aren’t just about documenting what your baby looked like. They’re about remembering what your family looked like during this chapter.

Professional Hair and Makeup Without Leaving Home

This may be one of my clients’ favorite parts of the full-service in-home newborn photography experience.

Professional hair and makeup can come right to your doorstep.

There is no salon appointment to squeeze in before your session and no rushing home afterward to feed the baby and get everyone ready.

You can sit down in your own home while my professional hair and makeup artist helps you feel polished and camera-ready.

Meanwhile, your baby is right there.

You can feed them. Check on them. Take a break if they need you.

For a mom who has just had a baby, removing those extra errands can make such a difference.

The Client Wardrobe: One Less Thing to Plan

Another question I hear all the time is:

“What are we going to wear?”

You don’t have to figure that out alone either.

My full-service clients have access to the SHP client wardrobe, including beautiful, photograph-friendly dresses selected specifically with motherhood sessions in mind.

I’ll help coordinate the rest of the family so everything works together without looking overly matched.

Instead of ordering ten dresses online, wondering whether they’ll photograph well, and returning nine of them, you can simply choose something beautiful from the wardrobe.

It is one more decision you don’t have to make.

The Full-Service In-home Newborn Photography Experience

Many families hire me because they don’t simply want someone to show up and take photographs.

My Signature Session is the full-service option for families who want the entire experience thoughtfully taken care of—from planning their session and wardrobe to professional hair and makeup when desired, photographing their family, and helping them decide what to do with their images afterward.

After your session, I guide you through choosing your favorite photographs and designing custom artwork for your home.

That may mean an heirloom album your child can someday hold in their own hands, framed photographs for the nursery, or a gallery wall that tells the story of your growing family.

You don’t have to spend hours sorting through hundreds of images or wonder which frame size will look right above your sofa.

I help you through those decisions.

Because for many of my clients, the goal isn’t simply to have another folder of photographs on their computer.

It’s to create something from this season that becomes part of their family’s home and eventually their child’s story.

Prefer Digital Images? There Is an All-Inclusive Option, Too.

Not every family is looking for a full-service artwork experience, and that’s okay.

For families who simply want a beautiful, relaxed newborn photography experience and their digital images, I also offer an all-inclusive Simplicity Session.

This option includes personalized session planning, access to my client wardrobe, a relaxed and guided full-length newborn session, professional hand editing, and all final digital images delivered through an online gallery.

The Simplicity Session does not include professional hair and makeup or the custom artwork design experience included with my Signature Sessions.

Both options allow you to have your newborn photographed beautifully at home. The difference really comes down to how much support you want before and after your session—and whether you want digital photographs alone or would like help turning those photographs into something tangible for your family.

When Should You Book Your In-Home Newborn Photographer?

Earlier than most parents think!

You do not need to wait until your baby is born to book your newborn photography session.

In fact, I recommend reaching out during pregnancy.

Your due date is used to reserve space on my calendar. Once your baby arrives, we’ll determine the actual session date based on their birth date and how everyone is doing.

Newborn sessions are typically photographed during those first few weeks after birth, when babies are still especially sleepy, curled up, and tiny.

Of course, babies have their own plans.

They arrive early. They arrive late. Recovery takes longer than expected. Sometimes families don’t even begin thinking about newborn photographs until their baby is already here.

If you’ve already had your baby, please don’t assume you’ve missed your opportunity. Reach out. Depending on my availability, I may still be able to photograph this season beautifully.

But if you’re currently pregnant and know newborn photographs are important to you, booking ahead gives us plenty of time to plan without scrambling after your baby arrives.

How long does an in-home newborn photography session take?

Most newborn sessions take approximately 2–3 hours, but I never want you to feel like we’re watching the clock. Newborns need time to eat, be changed, soothed, and cuddled, and we take breaks whenever your baby needs them. The goal is for your session to feel relaxed and move at your baby’s pace.

Do I need to clean my house before an in-home newborn session?

Please don’t feel like you need to deep clean your home before I arrive! We typically only photograph in a few carefully selected areas, and I’m always happy to move small items out of the way when needed. You just had a baby—the last thing I want you worrying about is whether your house looks perfect.

What happens if my newborn is awake or fussy during the session?

That’s completely okay. Your baby doesn’t need to sleep through the entire session for us to create beautiful photographs. I follow your baby’s cues throughout our time together, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing, changing, and cuddling. Wide-awake newborn portraits can also be incredibly sweet and are often some of my favorites.

Can grandparents be included in an in-home newborn session?

Absolutely. Grandparents are welcome to be included, and having your session at home can make it especially easy to incorporate them into a few meaningful photographs. These multigenerational images often become some of the most treasured photographs from a newborn session.

What if my home doesn’t have a lot of natural light?

Don’t worry if your home isn’t filled with huge windows or bright natural light. Part of my job is knowing how to work with different spaces and lighting situations. I’ll look around your home when I arrive, choose the areas that will photograph best, and bring what I need to create beautiful, consistent images of your family.

Do you travel throughout Northern Virginia for in-home newborn sessions?

Yes. I photograph newborns and their families throughout Northern Virginia and the surrounding DMV area, bringing the newborn photography experience directly to your home.
