Pricing guide from a full-service Northern Virginia maternity photographer
If you’re starting to plan your maternity session, one of the first questions that probably comes up is: How much do a maternity shoot cost?
And the honest answer is, there isn’t one flat number.
As a full-service Northern Virginia maternity photographer, I can tell you that maternity photography isn’t a one-size-fits-all experience. The cost can vary quite a bit depending on the level of service, the photographer’s experience, what’s included in your session, and the overall experience you’re investing in, not just the images themselves.
In this guide, I’m breaking it all down for you: what maternity photography in Northern Virginia typically costs, what factors influence pricing, what you can expect at different investment levels, and how to make sure you’re choosing a photographer and experience that truly aligns with your vision and value.

In Northern Virginia and the greater DMV, a professional maternity photography session typically costs between $300 and $2,500+, depending on the photographer’s experience level, what is included, and the type of session. Most families invest between $600 and $1,500 for a quality, full-session experience.
That is a wide range and it exists for good reason. The Northern Virginia and DC metro area has one of the highest concentrations of professional photographers on the East Coast, and pricing reflects everything from brand-new photographers building their portfolios to established full-service studios with wardrobe closets, makeup artists, and gallery reveal appointments.
The breakdown below will help you understand exactly what you get at each price point so you can make a confident, informed decision.

Before we get into the tiers, here are the main factors that move the price in either direction.
Photographer Experience & Reputation
A photographer with ten years of experience, a consistent portfolio, and a roster of five-star reviews commands a higher rate than someone who started shooting professionally last year. That rate reflects their skill, their editing, their client experience, and the systems they have built to make your session smooth from start to finish.
Session Length
A standard maternity session runs one to two hours. Mini sessions are typically 30 minutes. Longer sessions, especially those that include multiple locations, outfit changes, or family members, naturally cost more because they require more of the photographer’s time both during the shoot and in post-production.
What’s Included in the Session Fee
This is where pricing gets confusing, and it is the most important thing to ask about before you book. Some photographers charge a low session fee but sell images separately, meaning you pay $300 to book, then another $500 to $1,500 for the images you want. Others include a full digital gallery in their session fee. Neither model is inherently wrong, but you need to understand which one you are dealing with before you compare prices.
Always ask: Does the session fee include digital images? If so, how many? If not, what is the starting price for images?
Location: Studio, Outdoor, or In-Home Maternity Photography
Studio sessions are typically priced similarly to outdoor sessions, but outdoor sessions at specific locations, state parks, private venues, or locations that require permits, may come with additional fees. In-home sessions, if offered, are usually priced comparably to studio sessions.
For Northern Virginia specifically, popular locations like Rust Manor House, Morven Park, the National Arboretum, or Old Town Alexandria may carry permit fees ranging from $50 to $200+ depending on the venue and whether a commercial photography permit is required.

Hair & Makeup
Some photographers include professional hair and makeup as part of their full-service experience. Others coordinate it as an add-on or leave it up to you entirely. In the Northern Virginia and DC metro area, professional hair and makeup for a photography session typically runs $150 to $350 depending on the artist and complexity of the look.

Artwork and Physical Products
Many photographers separate the session fee from the cost of physical products, prints, canvas wall art, albums, and frames. If having a physical album or large wall prints matters to you, factor that into your total budget. High-quality prints and albums from a professional lab can range from a few hundred dollars to well over a thousand for a full album.

Here is a general pricing table for how maternity photography pricing in Northern Virginia generally breaks down across experience tiers.
Budget/New Photographer ($150–$400) photographers typically include session time, a digital gallery of 20–40 images with basic editing, and limited location options. This tier is best for families on a tight budget who still want professional photos.
Mid-Range ($500–$1,200) sessions generally cover a full 1–2 hour shoot, a curated edited gallery of 25–60 images, location flexibility, and a pre-session consultation. This is the best fit for most families and offers the strongest balance of quality and value.
Full-Service/Luxury ($1,200–$2,500+) packages are the most comprehensive, often including hair and makeup, gown rental or client wardrobe access, multi-location or studio shoots, a gallery reveal appointment, and printed artwork or albums. This tier is ideal for families wanting a premium, heirloom-quality experience.
Mini Sessions ($200–$500) are a shorter format — typically 30 minutes with 10–20 images and limited location or styling options. They’re usually held on scheduled mini session days and are a great option for mamas who want a few beautiful portraits without the full investment.
Use this comparison to understand what you are actually getting at each tier before you commit.
Pre-session consultations are rarely offered at the budget level, usually included at the mid-range level, and always part of a full-service/luxury experience.
Edited digital images are included across all tiers, though the level of editing varies — budget photographers provide basic edits, mid-range delivers solid edited galleries, and full-service packages feature premium editing.
Client wardrobe and gown rental is generally not available with budget photographers, sometimes offered at the mid-range level, and consistently included with full-service/luxury photographers.
Hair and makeup follows a similar pattern — not typically offered at the budget tier, sometimes available or coordinated at mid-range, and fully included or coordinated at the luxury level.
Gallery reveal appointments are not part of budget sessions, rarely offered at mid-range, and a standard part of the full-service experience.
Printed artwork and albums are available as add-ons at both the budget and mid-range tiers, while full-service photographers typically include them or provide guided options for ordering.
Styling guidance ranges from minimal at the budget level, to moderate at mid-range, to full-service styling support at the luxury tier.
Location scouting is largely left to the client with budget photographers, advised and assisted at the mid-range level, and fully planned and handled by the photographer at the full-service/luxury level.

Even when a session fee covers the basics, there are common add-ons that can affect your total investment. Here is what to expect.

Mini sessions are appealing because the upfront cost is lower, typically $200 to $500 in Northern Virginia. But there are a few things to consider before booking one for maternity photos specifically.
What mini sessions are great for
Where mini sessions fall short for maternity
For most families, a full session is worth the additional investment for maternity specifically. That said, if a mini session is what fits your budget right now, it is still infinitely better than no photos at all. A skilled photographer can create beautiful work in 30 minutes.

Yes and here is why it makes both financial and practical sense.
You save money
Most Northern Virginia photographers, (including me!), offer savings when you book both a maternity and newborn session together. Bundling is typically 10 to 20 percent less than booking each session individually.
You guarantee your newborn spot
The newborn window is short, the first seven to fourteen days of life. Photographers in Northern Virginia fill up fast. Booking both sessions during your pregnancy ensures your newborn session is already on the calendar when your baby arrives, so you are not scrambling in those exhausted first days.
You get a cohesive story
Maternity and newborn images from the same photographer have a consistent look, feel, and editing style. They work beautifully together as a set for display in your home, from the belly bump to the tiny baby who grew inside it.

When you reach out to Stephanie Honikel Photography, here is what happens:
Is there a “good” price for a maternity session in Northern Virginia?
The right price is the one that reflects what you actually want from the experience. If a handful of beautiful images is all you are looking for, a mid-range photographer in the $600 to $900 range with a solid portfolio will serve you well. If you want the full experience, styled, guided, with hair and makeup and physical artwork, budget $1,200 to $2,500. The most important thing is to compare prices by what is included, not just the session fee number alone.
How far in advance should I book a Northern Virginia maternity photographer?
Ideally, book by your 20th week. Most photographers ask you to book during your second trimester so that your session can be scheduled around 28 to 33 weeks — when your belly is beautifully round but you are still comfortable. Popular photographers in Northern Virginia can book out two to three months in advance, especially for spring and fall sessions.

Do I need to provide my own outfits?
It depends on the photographer. Full-service and mid-range photographers often provide access to a client wardrobe, maternity gowns, wraps, and accessories, at no extra charge or for a small rental fee. Budget photographers may not offer this. If you are unsure what to wear regardless, a pre-session consultation with your photographer is the best way to get personalized guidance.

Can my partner and older children be included in the session?
Absolutely and I highly recommend it! Including your partner and any older siblings creates images that tell the full story of your growing family. Most photographers include family members in a maternity session at no additional cost. Just confirm this when you book, especially if you have multiple children.
What questions should I ask before booking?
Great ones to start with: Does your session fee include digital images? How many? What is your turnaround time? Can I see a full gallery from a recent session? Do you have a client wardrobe? What happens if I go into labor before my session date?

Is it worth spending more on a professional maternity photographer?
These are the only images you will ever have of this pregnancy. You will not get a do-over. The bump disappears, the baby arrives, and life accelerates in ways that are hard to describe until you are in it. A set of beautifully photographed, professionally edited maternity images is something families consistently say they are glad they invested in and rarely wish they had skipped.
