The newborn stage is over faster than you can imagine. The tiny curled fists, the way they tuck their knees up to their chest, the miniature ears, the wrinkled little forehead, all of it transforms into a rolling, giggling, crawling baby before you have time to catch your breath.
Professional newborn photography session exists for one reason: so that you never forget what this moment felt like. These aren’t just photos. They are heirlooms, the images your child will look at when they are grown, marveling at how small they once were.
Because newborns change so rapidly, the window for capturing them in that brand-new, sleepy stage is incredibly short: typically the first ten to fourteen days of life.
As your Northern Virginia newborn photographer, my goal is simple: to create images that are authentically yours. Your family, your love, your story, documented beautifully so you can hold onto it forever.
Session types:
In-home newborn session:
In-studio newborn session:

An in-home newborn session is exactly what it sounds like: I come to you. You don’t have to pack up a diaper bag, bundle your brand-new baby into a car seat, or figure out parking. I arrive at your home with everything we need, and we create beautiful images right in the space where your family actually lives.
For mommas, the experience goes far beyond just the photos. I offer full hair and makeup services that come straight to your door, so you can sit back, get pampered, and feel completely like yourself before the camera even comes out.
Scheduling and arrangements are handled seamlessly ahead of your session so that on the day, all you have to do is enjoy the experience and soak in this precious time with your new baby.
We typically photograph in the rooms that matter most to your family like the nursery, the master bedroom, the living room. I use the natural window light in your home, which creates a soft, warm, organic quality that studio lighting simply cannot replicate.
Your baby may be posed in the crib, snuggled on your bed, curled up in your favorite reading chair, or held in your arms in the rocking chair you have already spent hours in.
I bring a curated collection of wraps, swaddles, headbands, and soft accessories to complement your space and color palette. You will also have access to my client closet which is a huge perk of my full-service experience.
You are welcome to use any special items you already have, a meaningful blanket, a stuffed animal that belonged to you as a child, or a tiny outfit that has been handed down through the family.

In-home newborn sessions in Northern Virginia tend to have a lifestyle feel, meaning they capture real moments alongside the more styled, posed shots. You nursing your baby, dad doing skin-to-skin and big sister leaning in for a kiss.

My Northern Virginia photography studio is a warm, curated space designed specifically for newborn sessions. It is stocked with headbands, bonnets, outfits, and an ever-changing collection of seasonal and classic props. Every detail has been chosen to create timeless, gallery-worthy images.
What an In-Studio Newborn Session Looks Like
Studio sessions allow for more variety in poses and setups than in-home sessions. Because I control the environment, the lighting, the temperature, the props, I can create a wider range of looks within a single session. We might start with a classic wrapped pose with complementary colors, and end with family portraits against a clean, simple backdrop.
Posed vs. Lifestyle Newborn Photography Session in the Studio
Studio sessions lean toward the classic posed newborn style, those dreamy, curled-up sleeping poses that look almost impossibly perfect. However, I also incorporate lifestyle elements: genuine expressions, candid parent moments, and the real emotion of those first days. You never have to choose between beautiful and authentic. You get both.
Who In-Studio Newborn Sessions Are Perfect For
Every single pose in a studio session is performed with your baby’s safety as the absolute priority. I have years of experience safely transitioning babies into beautiful poses, and I never rush. If your baby is not comfortable in a pose, we simply move to something else. Your little one’s comfort and safety always come first.

What your family wears matters more than you might think. Clothing choices can make the difference between images that feel cohesive and timeless and images that feel dated or busy.
Here are my top guidelines.
Mom: Flowy neutral dresses, loose knit tops, soft robes, simple basics in cream, taupe, dusty blue, sage green
Dad / Partner: Solid neutrals: white, cream, light gray, navy, olive. Simple button-down or fitted henley
Siblings: Coordinate with family palette. Soft neutrals, simple textures, layering. No logos or characters
Baby: Wraps, swaddles & accessories provided or bring a special heirloom outfit or meaningful item
Avoid: Busy patterns, logos, bright neon colors, matching outfits that are too identical

The most important piece of advice I can give you: book your Northern Virginia newborn photographer during your second trimester. Here’s why:
The Newborn Window Is Short
The ideal window for posed newborn photography is the first seven to fourteen days of your baby’s life. During this time, babies sleep deeply, curl into those beautiful newborn poses naturally, and have not yet developed strong startle reflexes. After two weeks, they become harder to pose and are more easily awakened.
Photographers Book Up Fast
Northern Virginia is a large, growing metro area with a lot of expecting families and the best photographers fill their calendars quickly. If you wait until after your baby arrives to start looking, you may find that your preferred photographer is fully booked for weeks.
How the Booking Process Works
Flexibility is built in. If your baby arrives early, we adjust. If you go past your due date, same thing. The goal is always to capture your baby at the best possible time.

As a Northern Virginia newborn photographer, I serve families throughout the entire DMV region. Here is a look at the areas I work in regularly.
Ashburn & Loudoun County: Ashburn is one of the most popular areas I photograph in. In-home sessions in Loudoun County tend to feature beautiful, light-filled homes with stunning nurseries. Studio sessions are also available for Ashburn families.
Arlington: Arlington families are a mix of in-home and studio clients. The urban, modern aesthetic of many Arlington homes photographs beautifully, and I love working in the cozy rowhomes and apartments of this community.
Alexandria: Old Town Alexandria is one of my favorite areas for lifestyle sessions. The historic character of the homes and the beautiful natural light create images with a warmth that is hard to replicate anywhere else.
Leesburg: Leesburg families often have gorgeous farmhouse-style homes with incredible natural light, a dream for in-home newborn sessions. I love the community feel of Leesburg and the surrounding Loudoun County area.
Fairfax & Northern Fairfax County: Fairfax is centrally located in Northern Virginia, making it a convenient location for both in-home and studio sessions. Many Fairfax families also choose my studio.
Washington D.C. & Maryland: I regularly photograph newborns and families in Washington D.C., Bethesda, Rockville, Silver Spring, and surrounding Maryland communities. If you are in the DMV area and wondering if I will travel to you, the answer is almost certainly yes. Reach out and let me know where you are located.

Newborn photography sessions are never rushed. We follow the baby’s lead entirely. If your baby needs to eat, we pause. If they need a diaper change, we take care of it. A typical session runs two to four hours, much of that is gentle waiting, feeding breaks, and the slow, patient work of creating truly beautiful images.
Arrival and Setup: For studio sessions, we’ll go over all the details during your planning call. When I arrive, I’ll typically do a quick walkthrough of the spaces we plan to use throughout your session.
Family and Sibling Portraits: I always include family portraits and sibling portraits as part of the session. If you have older children, I typically photograph them early while everyone is fresh.
Classic Posed Newborn Photography Session
Posed in tiny wraps with delicate accessories. These images are timeless and work beautifully as wall art. Every newborn pose is performed safely and patiently, with your baby’s comfort guiding every transition.
Lifestyle Newborn Photography Session
Lifestyle photography captures real moments, baby sleeping in your arms, nursing, being held skin-to-skin, or simply resting in their crib. The result is images that feel alive with real emotion.
A Mix of Both
Most of my sessions incorporate both posed and lifestyle elements. You get the beautifully styled images perfect for wall art and the candid, emotional images that capture how this all actually felt. That combination is, in my experience, exactly what families treasure most.

Siblings
Siblings are absolutely welcome in newborn sessions and some of my favorite images involve a big brother or sister meeting the baby. Children do not need to perform or sit still. We capture genuine interactions, and those images are pure gold.
Pets
Yes, pets can be included! If your dog or cat is part of the family, they can absolutely be part of the session. I just ask that they are well-groomed and that you have someone available to manage them between shots so we can keep the session moving smoothly.

Think you found the right Northern Virginia newborn photographer? Let’s make it official!

3. I will send you a detailed proposal with session options and investment information

| How much does a newborn photography session cost in Northern Virginia?
Investment in newborn photography varies depending on session type, length, and what is included in your collection. I offer transparent, detailed pricing and am happy to walk you through your options during a consultation. The short answer: newborn photography is a one-time investment in images you will have forever. |
| How do I know my baby will be safe during the session?
Safety is my top priority, always. Every pose I use is one I have performed hundreds of times. I work slowly, gently, and patiently. I never force a pose, and I never leave your baby unattended. You are present throughout the entire session and can stop or redirect at any time. |
| When is the best time to schedule my session?
During your second trimester! The ideal window to actually photograph your newborn is within the first 7 to 14 days of life, but spots fill quickly. Booking during pregnancy ensures you have a photographer secured and can schedule immediately after baby arrives. |
| What if my baby cries the whole time?
This is one of the most common worries I hear from parents and one that almost never becomes the reality. Newborns are remarkably soothing to work with when you know the right techniques. Warmth, gentle motion, a full belly, and patience go a very long way. I have never walked away from a session empty-handed. → How to Get Your Newborn to Sleep: Advice From A Newborn Photographer |
| What questions should I ask before booking a newborn photographer?
Great question! You should ask about session style, safety protocols, what is included, turnaround time, and whether you can see a full gallery. I cover all of this in my dedicated post. |
| Do you travel outside of Northern Virginia?
Yes! While Northern Virginia is my home base, I regularly photograph families in Washington D.C., Maryland, and occasionally beyond. Travel fees may apply depending on your location. Reach out and let me know where you are, and we will figure it out! |
