Preparing for your in home newborn session in Northern Virginia does not have to feel overwhelming, especially when you have just had a baby and your brain is running on three hours of sleep and pure love.
As a Northern Virginia newborn photographer, in-home sessions are genuinely my favorite. There is something irreplaceable about photographing your family in the space where your real life happens, the nursery you spent months decorating, the bed where your baby slept for the first time, the chair you have already logged hundreds of hours in.
But a little preparation goes a long way toward a smooth, relaxed session.
Here are my 11 essential tips for getting ready for your newborn photo session, all of them tried, tested, and recommended from years of in-home newborn sessions across Northern Virginia and the DC metro area.

The best time to book your NOVA in-home newborn photography session is during your second trimester, well before your baby arrives. In Northern Virginia, in-home newborn sessions fill up quickly, and the ideal window for photographing your newborn is within the first seven to fourteen days of life.
During those early days, newborns sleep deeply, curl naturally into beautiful poses, and are still in that brand-new, curled-up stage that changes so quickly. After two weeks, that changes fast.
When you book in advance, I hold a tentative date around your due date. Once your baby arrives, send me a quick message and we will confirm the exact session date, typically within that golden first-two-weeks window. Flexibility is always built in for early arrivals and late ones.

Before we take a single photo, we will have a consultation where I get to know you and your family. This is one of my favorite parts of the process and something I do with every client.
Tell me about your newborn if they have already arrived, their temperament, how they sleep, what soothes them. Tell me about siblings, your home’s layout, the rooms you love most. Share your vision, your style, any specific moments you are hoping to capture. The more I know, the more personalized your session will be.
By taking the time to get to know each other, we’ll be able to create a more personalized and comfortable session. This will also give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the process or what to expect from your in home newborn photography session.

Before your in home newborn session, consider what things you like to do with your newborn baby that make you feel excited or attached to your baby. While I’ll always help provide poses and recommendations, these photos are ultimately your keepsakes! I want you to have the photos you want. What are some things that you want captured during your in home photography session in Northern Virginia? This might look like:
These are your forever memories. I want you to have the ones that mean the most to you. So, take the time to jot down some ideas and poses that you want to try during your session.
In no way do I expect to walk into a spotless home, but for your sake, you’ll likely feel the most calm when you’re not surrounded by a mess. Consider the areas you want to spend most of the session in and prep them. This might look like tidying up the living room, making your bed, or clearing off counters.
You could lay a light blanket over the top of darker bedding or even just wipe down the light fixtures. Adding just a few of these little details may have a significant impact on the mood and style of your photographs. I want to capture you in your natural environment, not your “show-ready” one!
A little tidying in the rooms we will photograph goes a long way toward images that feel calm and intentional. We will typically work in two or three rooms, most often the primary bedroom, the nursery, and the living room. During our pre-session consultation, we will identify exactly which spaces we plan to use.
For each of those rooms, here is what helps:
You do not need to deep clean. You need to create a little visual breathing room in the spaces we will be in. I will handle the rest with framing and angles.

Before I arrive, open every blind and pull back every curtain in the rooms we will be photographing. Natural window light is the foundation of beautiful in-home newborn photography. It is soft, warm, directional, and flattering in a way that no artificial light can fully replicate.
In Northern Virginia homes, the best light typically comes through east-facing windows in the morning and west-facing windows in the late afternoon. This is part of why I ask about your home during our pre-session consultation so we can schedule your session at the time of day when your specific rooms are at their most beautiful.
About an hour before I arrive for you in home newborn session, turn your thermostat up to around 72 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. I know that sounds warm because it is. But there is a reason for it.
Newborns are most comfortable when they are warm, and a comfortable newborn is a sleepy newborn. Sleepy newborns are easier to pose, settle more quickly between setups, and photograph more beautifully. When we are doing outfit changes or transitioning between setups, your baby may briefly be less bundled and a warm room makes all the difference.
Once your session is done, you can turn it back down. Think of it as a small, temporary investment in the best possible photos.
Plan to feed your baby as I am arriving or right as I am getting set up. A full baby is a content baby which is exactly what we want for in-home newborn photography.
This timing matters more than you might think. A baby who ate 30 minutes ago and is already stirring will make the session more challenging than a baby who just finished nursing and is in that perfect milk drowsy state. If your baby tends to fall asleep during feeds, that is absolutely fine, we will work with it.
If your baby wakes up and needs to eat during the session, we pause. Always. There is no rushing a newborn, and I never expect you to push through a feed for the sake of a shot.
Sometimes, your newborn may need a little distraction or entertainment during your in home newborn session. Determine which items are best at soothing your little munchkin. For example, this could be a pacifier or a specific stuffed animal. Whatever comforts your baby, have it on hand so we can use it if needed. Keeping your newborn content and happy will help us capture the best photos.
You are in these photos and you deserve to feel beautiful, comfortable, and like yourself
Here are some guidelines for what to wear for in-home newborn sessions:
For moms
For dads and partners
For older siblings
You don’t need to overthink this. When in doubt, bring a few options and we will figure it out together at the start of the session.

If your family will be part of the newborn session, that’s great! You want to be sure they are all aware of how the process goes and what is to be expected of them. Since this is not a family photo shoot, the focus will always be on capturing the newborn. However, sometimes it’s okay for little sister or big brother to peek in with the baby! Even your dog can pop in for a quick hello!
Siblings
Siblings are absolutely welcome in the session, some of my favorite images from Northern Virginia in-home newborn sessions involve a big brother or sister discovering the baby for what feels like the hundredth time and being caught completely in the moment.
Let them know that a photographer is coming and that the focus will be on the new baby, but that they will get their moment too. I always photograph siblings early in the session while everyone is fresh. There is no pressure to perform or sit still, we capture genuine connection, and that is always better anyway.
Partners
Your partner is part of this story too. Remind them that they will be in some of the images, a quick grooming check the morning of the session is always a good idea, and wearing something coordinated with you matters even if they are only in a few shots.
Pets
Pets can absolutely be included for a quick hello at some point during the session. Just ask someone to have them available on a leash or nearby so we can incorporate them briefly without disrupting the flow. A quick cameo from your dog or cat in a photo is always a hit.
