If you are searching for couples maternity photoshoot ideas in Northern Virginia, you are in exactly the right place and I am so glad you found me!
I am Stephanie, a Northern Virginia maternity and newborn photographer based in Leesburg, and I have been photographing pregnant mamas and their partners across Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, and the DC area for over a decade.
This guide is everything I know about couple maternity sessions: the poses that actually feel natural, the locations that photograph beautifully in Northern Virginia, what to wear, when to go, and how to walk out of your session with images that stop you in your tracks. Let’s get into it.
Quick note: If you are here because you are also thinking about newborn photography, I offer a maternity + newborn bundle that a lot of my Northern Virginia families love. You can check out newborn photography sessions here and I am happy to hold your spot on the calendar so both seasons are covered!

Why should couples do maternity photos together? A couples maternity photoshoot captures the relationship at its heart, two people becoming parents together. They document not just the baby bump but the partnership, the tenderness, and the anticipation that defines this season as a couple, not just as an individual.
Some mamas come to me a little hesitant about including their partner. Maybe he is not a big photo person. Maybe he feels awkward in front of a camera. (Spoiler: most partners do at first, and they are always glad they were included!)
Here is the thing about maternity photos with your partner: they tell a completely different story than solo portraits. Solo images are beautiful and I love them. But couple images capture something else: the two of you on the edge of something life-changing. The way he looks at you. The weight of his hand on your belly. The quiet, private smile between the two of you that says we made this. That is what people cry over when they look back at their galleries.
I have photographed hundreds of couples across Northern Virginia and across every personality type. The quiet introverted dad who barely wanted to be there, I have a photo of him pressing his forehead to his wife’s bump and it is the most stunning image in their entire gallery. You do not have to be photogenic. You just have to show up.
What are the best maternity photoshoot poses for couples? The best couples maternity poses are ones that feel like a natural extension of how you already interact: standing face-to-face, sitting close together with both hands on the bump, the partner standing behind with arms around the belly, or both looking down at the bump together. Connection beats perfection in every case.
I don’t tell you to do a certain pose and say ‘hold this for three seconds.’ Everything I do is guided in real time. I give you gentle prompts that lead to real moments, and then I let the image find itself. That said, here are the core pose categories I work through in a couple’s session, so you know what to expect.

Standing or sitting face-to-face is always where I start with couples because it establishes connection immediately. I will usually prompt one of you to say something to the other, whisper a name you have been calling the baby, or just look at each other for a beat longer than feels comfortable. The awkward half-second before someone laughs? That is the image.
Some variations that photograph beautifully in Northern Virginia’s outdoor settings:

This is the pose most people picture when they think of couples maternity photoshoot, and there is a reason it is a classic. One partner stands behind the pregnant mama, both arms around her belly, cheek resting on the side of her head or pressed to her temple. It is protective, warm, and it does something remarkable in photos: it shows both people and centers the pregnancy in the same frame.
What makes it feel fresh in my sessions is all the small variations:

These are some of my personal favorites, especially outdoors. When you are seated, the whole body relaxes, the bump is front and center, and the images have a groundedness that standing poses sometimes miss. I use these a lot at outdoor maternity Northern Virginia sessions, on a blanket in a meadow, on a stone wall in a park, on a low bench.

These are some of the most natural-feeling images I capture, and they are especially beautiful in Northern Virginia’s outdoor settings where there is a path, an open field, or a tree-lined road to walk through. Movement breaks the stiffness that can come with posed sessions and gives you something to do with your hands and body.

Studio couple sessions have a completely different energy: quieter, more intimate, more controlled. In my Leesburg photography studio I work with soft window-quality light and a curated backdrop environment, and the poses tend to be more still and intentional.
Where are the best locations for couple maternity photos in Northern Virginia? The best maternity photo locations in Northern Virginia include the wildflower fields and farm landscapes of Loudoun County, the historic streetscapes of Old Town Alexandria, the open meadows of Morven Park in Leesburg, and the soft studio environment of my professional Leesburg photography studio.
Northern Virginia is genuinely one of the most gorgeous regions for outdoor photography in the entire Mid-Atlantic. We have mountains, meadows, rivers, historic streets, and open farmland all within 30 to 45 minutes of most of the region. This is one of my favorite things about photographing maternity sessions here, the options are stunning.

The ideal time for a maternity photoshoot is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy, when the bump is round and prominent but you still have energy and comfort. In Northern Virginia, timing your session around the best seasonal light, spring blooms, fall foliage, or the long golden hours of late summer, can make the images even more stunning.
Timing matters more than most people realize, and I talk through this carefully with every client. Here is the breakdown:
Best Seasons in Northern Virginia
Spring (April – May): Cherry blossoms, wildflowers, soft green light, and mild temperatures make spring one of the most popular seasons for maternity sessions. Loudoun County especially is spectacular — the farm country comes alive and the light is soft and beautiful.
Summer (June – August): The golden hour in summer is extraordinary and lasts long into the evening. Sunset sessions at 7:30 or 8pm are some of my favorites. The trade-off is heat and humidity, which is why a lot of summer clients opt for studio sessions instead.
Fall (September – November): This is my busiest season and for good reason. The foliage in Northern Virginia, particularly in Loudoun County and along the Shenandoah foothills, is extraordinary. Colors peak in mid-to-late October. If you want a fall session, book early.
Winter (December – February): Winter sessions have a quiet, intimate beauty that I love. Studio sessions are especially popular in winter, but outdoor sessions on a clear, bright day can be stunning too — bare trees, blue sky, and clean light.
Best Time of Day
For outdoor sessions, the golden hour, the 60 to 90 minutes before sunset, is almost always the best window. The light is warm, directional, and incredibly flattering. Morning sessions (the first hour after sunrise) are also beautiful but logistically harder for a lot of families.
For studio sessions, time of day matters less, which is one of the advantages of coming to a controlled environment.

What should couples wear for maternity photos? For couple maternity photos, the pregnant mama should wear something that showcases the bump, a form-fitting or flowy dress in a neutral, earthy, or soft tone. Her partner should complement without matching exactly: a well-fitted shirt or casual button-down in a coordinating neutral tone. The goal is cohesion, not coordination.
I have a full dedicated guide on what to wear for a maternity photoshoot that goes deep on this topic but here is the short version specifically for couple sessions.
For the Mama
I have a full client wardrobe at my Leesburg studio available for studio and some outdoor sessions. Dozens of gowns in a range of sizes. You are welcome to use them at no extra charge, just let me know ahead of time.

For the Partner
My general rule: partners should look like a polished, dressed-up version of how they look on a nice Sunday. Not a suit (unless that is your vibe), but not a graphic tee either.
Client Closet and Styling

Part of that full-service experience is access to my client closet, a curated wardrobe of gowns and coordinating pieces available to you at no extra charge. I also help coordinate outfits across your whole family so everything works together without looking matchy-matchy. For mamas, you’ll also enjoy a bit of pampering with hair and makeup so you can feel completely confident for the session.
Before the Session
Every couple’s maternity session begins with a planning consultation, either on the phone or via Zoom. We talk through your vision, your due date, the location options that make sense for your timeline and style, and what I recommend for outfits. I send a preparation guide specific to your session details so you arrive ready.
Part of that preparation is a wardrobe appointment. For most of my Northern Virginia clients, I schedule an in-person styling session at the studio so you can actually try on gowns from my client wardrobe, see what works on your body and your bump, and plan out the rest of your family’s outfits from there.
Seeing a dress on you in real life is so different from seeing it on a hanger or a screen, and I love being able to help you make that decision in person. For clients who live further away, I offer virtual wardrobe appointments as well. Either way, I always ask that you come with a backup outfit option ready to go, because fit is hard to predict without trying something on, and I want you to feel completely confident on the day of your session.
Arrival and Settling In
When you arrive, whether that is at my Leesburg studio or an outdoor Northern Virginia location, the first few minutes are just decompression time. I do not pick up my camera immediately. We talk. I show you around. You settle in. Partners especially need this time, most partners arrive braced for discomfort, and a few minutes of normal conversation completely changes the energy.
The Session Itself
Standard couple maternity sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. We work through a variety of poses and setups, usually starting with the poses that feel easiest and building toward more intimate ones once you are warmed up. For outdoor sessions, I structure the shoot to make the most of the golden hour light as the session progresses.
I give constant, gentle direction so you always know what I am asking for. And I keep things light. There is always laughter. There is usually a moment where one of you says something to the other that I will absolutely capture.
The Gallery
After your session, I handselect the absolute best images from our time together and edit every single one to perfection. I do not hand over a raw gallery and ask you to sort through hundreds of shots. I do the curation for you, so what lands in your gallery is already the best of the best. Turnaround is typically one week.
From there, I help you think through how to display your favorites, whether that is wall art, an album, or heirloom prints. I offer full-service artwork design so you are never left staring at a folder of files wondering what to do next.
Studio couple maternity sessions offer controlled lighting, warmth, and intimacy, ideal for families who want a timeless, editorial look or are shooting in extreme weather. Outdoor sessions offer natural light, seasonal beauty, and a sense of space, ideal for families who want landscapes and movement to be part of their story. Both can be stunning.
Choose a studio session if: you want full control of lighting and environment, you are shooting in summer heat or winter cold, you want access to a full wardrobe, or you love a clean, elevated, editorial aesthetic.
Choose an outdoor session if: you want Northern Virginia’s natural landscapes as part of your story, you love golden hour light, you want movement and freedom, or you have a specific location that is meaningful to you as a couple.
This season is short. The bump will be gone before you believe it. The tiredness and the anticipation and the way your partner looks at you right now (that specific look) that is worth capturing while it is happening.
I would love to photograph you both. Reach out through my contact page and let’s start planning. Tell me your due date, where you are located in Northern Virginia, and whether you are drawn to the outdoors or the studio, and I will come back to you quickly with everything you need to know.
Frequently Asked Questions About Couple Maternity Photography in Northern Virginia
What are some Northern Virginia photoshoot locations?
Morven Park is a great option for outdoor photography!
How far in advance should I book a couples maternity photoshoot session?
I recommend reaching out around 18 to 20 weeks to secure your session date, especially if you are hoping for a specific season or outdoor location. Fall sessions in October fill up the fastest, often 8 to 10 weeks in advance. I am happy to hold a tentative date while you finalize your plans.
What if my partner really does not want to be in the photos?
This comes up more often than you might think. My suggestion is always to book the session for yourself and let your partner know they are welcome but not required for the full session. In almost every case, once a partner is there, warmed up, and sees how relaxed the environment is, they want to be in the images. That said, if individual portraits are more your vision, those are beautiful too, we can do both.
Can we include other children or our dog?
Absolutely, and I love sessions that include siblings or furry family members. I do recommend planning the family and pet portions early in the session when energy is highest, and then having a plan for where kids and dogs will go for the couple portion. I can help you think through the logistics in our pre-session consultation.
Do you travel for outdoor sessions in Northern Virginia?
Yes. I travel throughout Northern Virginia for outdoor maternity sessions. A small travel fee may apply for locations more than 30 miles from Leesburg. The travel is almost always worth it for the right location.
What if it rains on our session day?
Weather is always a factor for outdoor sessions in Northern Virginia, and I handle it with a simple policy: we monitor the forecast together in the days before your session and I will give you my honest read on whether the conditions are going to be beautiful or problematic. If we need to reschedule, we do. I do not charge rescheduling fees for genuine weather issues.
Do you offer both maternity and newborn photography?
I do, and I offer a maternity plus newborn bundle that a lot of my Northern Virginia families love. Booking both sessions together means your newborn spot is reserved before baby arrives — which matters more than most people realize, since I typically book out weeks in advance. You can learn more about my newborn photography sessions and reach out to start the conversation.
What does a couples maternity photoshoot session cost in Northern Virginia?
My sessions are full-service, meaning they include the session itself, professional editing, and access to my client wardrobe. I do not offer basic digital packages — everything is designed to result in images that are printed and preserved. Pricing details are on my maternity photography page, and I am always happy to walk through your options on a call.
