You want it to feel welcoming and cozy but still stylish and chic. That’s why, as a newborn photographer in Northern VA, I’ve got a few tips for decorating your nursery!

I’m going to show you everything you need to know about decorating your nursery that will be perfect for your growing family! So, let’s get started!

1: Create a color palette

The first and, in my opinion, most important tip for decorating your nursery is finding the perfect color palette. You can choose from a wide variety of options, but the most important thing is to pick the ones that work well together. It’s often best to stick with neutral tones, like white and gray, when you’re starting.

If you want to add some brightness to the room, try delicate pastels or bright pops of color in the furniture, curtains, wall décor, etc. Having soft, neutral tones looks ethereal in photos and makes the room feel light, airy, and peaceful!

2: Or choose a theme

Choosing a theme before decorating your baby’s nursery is crucial. It sets the tone and mood of the room. Consider colors, characters, or motifs that inspire joy and calm. The theme should resonate with your personal style, yet be soothing and stimulating for your baby’s development.

3: Use one large statement piece

Once you’ve chosen your color palette, it’s time to start making decisions about which items should go where in the room! My advice as a newborn photographer in Northern VA is to try not to get too caught up in the details; instead, focus on creating an overall look that works for you and your family.

Think about how each item will contribute to the feel of the space, but don’t worry too much about whether it’s perfectly symmetrical or perfectly balanced. You’ll figure that out later! Keep the flow in mind. It makes sense to have the diaper changing station on top of a low dresser where you can fill the drawers with clean diapers and wipes vs on the other side of the room!

4: Mix patterns and textures

One of my favorite tips for decorating your nursery is mixing patterns and textures. This contrast looks beautiful in photos of your little one and can make a room feel cozy! If you want to add some color and vibrancy to your space, try using bright patterns on your walls, such as an accent wall. Adding a rug to hardwood floors is also helpful here. This will give the room some personality without making it feel busy, which is always a good thing.

5: Get functional items that are also stylish:

When it comes time to choose furniture for your nursery, think about what will be useful in terms of keeping the baby safe and comfortable. Also, consider items with added storage. For example, getting a couple of small end tables to go alongside the crib can add extra storage and also look classy and chic. The same concept applies to larger items like cribs. Make sure you’re purchasing a strong and sturdy crib. Some cribs even have storage underneath today, which can be highly beneficial!
