There is no version of your baby that exists for very long.
The curled up newness, the tiny fingers wrapped around yours, the way they sleep through almost anything in those first couple weeks, all of it changes so quickly that most parents barely remember the details without a photograph to hold onto.
Newborn photography is how you keep that season, not just as a memory but as something you can look at years from now. If you’re starting to plan your baby’s session and aren’t sure what you want it to look like, here are the ideas I come back to again and again.

In-home newborn sessions have become one of the most requested ways to photograph a newborn, and it makes sense why.
Your home already holds the light, the textures, and the quiet corners that tell your family’s story. We might photograph in your nursery, your primary bedroom, or a sunny spot in the living room. Nothing needs to be styled or rearranged. I simply find where the light is best and build the session around it.
The biggest benefit of an in-home newborn session is comfort. You’re not packing a diaper bag or loading a newborn into the car during those first exhausting weeks. You just stay home while I take care of the rest.

A studio session offers something different, and just as beautiful.
With full control over lighting and backdrop, studio sessions tend to produce a more polished, classic look. This is where you’ll find those timeless images of baby curled up on a soft blanket, tucked into a bucket or basket, or wrapped in a simple swaddle against a clean, neutral background.
Studio sessions also give us more flexibility with posing since everything is set up specifically for newborn photography from the start. If you love the look of traditional newborn portraits, this is often the best route to get there.

Some of the most treasured images from a newborn session are not of the baby alone.
I love photographing mom holding her baby close to her chest, dad cradling their newborn in the crook of his arm, or both parents leaning in together over their baby between them.
These images capture something a solo portrait never can, the very beginning of your family as it exists now.
For parents who want a few polished portraits of themselves too, my full-service Signature Sessions include access to a client wardrobe and complimentary hair and makeup, so you can feel just as ready for the camera as your baby.

If your baby has an older sibling, this relationship is worth building into the session.
Some of my favorite images come from letting a sibling simply be a sibling. That might mean a big brother or sister curled up next to the baby with a favorite book, tiny hands wrapped around the baby’s fingers, or a sibling proudly holding the baby with a parent close by to help.
These moments don’t need much direction. Siblings tend to give you their most genuine reactions in the seconds right before or after we ask for a smile.

For a lot of families, the dog was the first baby, and I love including them in the session whenever possible.
A pet curled up near the bassinet, resting against a parent’s leg while they hold the baby, or simply nearby during a quiet family moment can become some of the most meaningful images from the entire session. In-home sessions make this especially easy, since your pet is already comfortable in a space they know.

The season your baby is born into can shape the entire feel of your session, and each one brings something a little different.
Spring brings soft, fresh light and a gentle energy that photographs beautifully both indoors and out. If your home has a garden, blooming tree, or a bright window with new spring light coming through, we can easily work that into your session. Light florals, soft pastels, and simple whites all feel right for this time of year without needing to be matched too perfectly.
Summer sessions tend to feel light and airy, especially indoors where we can lean into breezy natural light without the heat becoming a factor for baby. If your family wants a few outdoor images, we typically plan around early morning or late afternoon light to keep things comfortable. Soft cottons, simple rompers, and barely-there color palettes all photograph beautifully during these warmer months.
Fall brings warm, golden light and cozy textures like knit blankets and soft neutral wraps. If your family wants a few outdoor images, fall also offers some of the most forgiving light and color of the year.
Winter sessions tend to lean soft and quiet, with layered knits, muted tones, and that low winter light that pours beautifully through a window. There is something fitting about photographing a brand new baby during the season that already feels the most still.
Christmas newborn sessions are a favorite for families welcoming a baby right around the holidays. Simple touches like a knit stocking, a small ornament, or a cozy red or cream outfit can nod to the season without feeling overly themed. I always recommend keeping it simple so the focus stays on your baby, not the props around them.

If you already know you want more than one session to document your baby’s first year, the First Year Collective is built exactly for that.
This membership style package includes three or four Signature Sessions scheduled throughout your baby’s first year, along with priority booking, savings on creative fees, complimentary professional hair and makeup when desired, an album incentive at each ordering appointment, and a complimentary smash cake to celebrate your baby’s first birthday.
It’s a great fit for families who know they want to capture every stage, not just the newborn days, and who would rather plan the whole year at once instead of booking each session separately as it comes up.
Starting with your newborn session and carrying through to that first birthday cake smash, the Collective tells the full story of a year that goes by faster than anyone expects.
I photograph newborn sessions throughout Northern Virginia and Washington DC, bringing the experience directly to families wherever they call home.
In Leesburg, where my studio is based, I offer both in-home and in-studio newborn sessions for families who want that flexibility close to home.
In Alexandria, I regularly photograph newborns in-home, capturing the light and layout unique to the city’s rowhomes and townhomes.
In Ashburn, I work with growing families throughout the neighborhood, often incorporating nurseries and outdoor spaces into the session.
And for families in DC, I bring the full newborn photography experience into the city, whether that means an apartment with beautiful window light or a home with a bit more room to work with.
No matter where you’re located throughout the DMV, the goal stays the same: to create newborn photographs that feel like your family, in the place where your story is actually unfolding.
You don’t have to choose only one of these ideas. Many of my sessions blend several together, a mix of in-home and studio style posing, a few images with parents, a handful with siblings or pets, and seasonal touches that reflect the time of year your baby arrived.
During our consultation call, we’ll talk through your space, your family, and what matters most to you, so your session ends up reflecting your family specifically rather than a generic list of poses.
Both options create beautiful images, and the right choice usually comes down to comfort and the look you’re drawn to. In-home sessions feel personal and relaxed, while studio sessions offer a more polished, classic style.

Absolutely. Pets are welcome to be part of your session, and in-home sessions make it especially easy since they’re already comfortable in their own space.
