Alright, mamas, let’s talk about when you should schedule your Northern Virginia newborn photoshoot session! I know this may seem like a self-explanatory topic, but you’d be surprised how common it is for new moms to try and book a session with me a few days after they’ve already had the baby.
Now, I understand that logic. You’re probably thinking, “Steph…you can’t have a newborn photography session without the newborn!” Yes…that’s definitely true! However, you should schedule your newborn photoshoot before the baby is born. Why? In this article, I’ll cover why you need to schedule your Northern Virginia newborn photoshoot before your baby is born and how far in advance you need to book. Let’s dive in!

The best time for newborn photography is the first 5 to 14 days of life. In that window, babies spend most of their time in deep, heavy sleep, which is what allows me to gently position them into those beautiful curled poses you see in my portfolio. They are also still flexible enough in those first two weeks for the classic newborn setups. After two weeks, babies become more alert, lighter sleepers, and harder to pose. Sessions are still possible and beautiful after the two-week mark, but the style of images changes.
That is a very short window. And it starts the moment your baby is born, not the moment you start looking for a photographer. If you wait until after birth to search for and book someone, there is a real chance that by the time you find a photographer whose work you love and whose schedule has an opening, you are already past that ideal window.
Booking during your pregnancy is how you protect that 5-to-14-day sweet spot. We put a tentative date on the calendar based on your due date, and then we confirm and adjust once baby actually arrives. It is a simple process, and it makes all the difference in the type of images you walk away with.

I book up quickly and I limit the number of sessions I take each week because I believe every family deserves my full attention and energy, not a rushed back-to-back schedule. That means my availability is genuinely limited, and popular dates fill up well in advance.
This is not unique to me. Any experienced newborn photographer in Northern Virginia who does quality work and limits their bookings will have a waitlist. The photographers who have immediate availability for a three-day-old baby are often the ones who have not yet built a full client base.
Fall is the busiest time by far. Families who are due in the fall, or whose babies will be newborns during September, October, and November, should reach out as early as possible. I sometimes book fall newborn sessions six months or more in advance. Spring is the second busiest season. If your due date falls in either of those windows, waiting until the third trimester to reach out is cutting it close.
Typically, newborn photography sessions are booked during the third trimester. This is because your due date is much more set in stone at this time. However, the sooner we can get you on the books, the better!
The safest approach: contact me as soon as you know you are expecting and want to document this time. Even if your due date is months away, we can have a conversation, talk through your vision, and get a date held. Earlier is always better.

A great newborn session does not happen by accident. It is planned. And that planning is much easier, more thorough, and more enjoyable when it happens during your pregnancy rather than in the sleep-deprived haze of the first week postpartum.
When you book in advance, we have a real consultation. We talk through your vision for the session: whether you want a studio session at my Leesburg studio or an in-home lifestyle session, whether you are drawn to posed newborn portraits or a more natural documentary approach, which images from my portfolio resonate with you, and what details you want to make sure we capture.
We also talk through practical things: what to wear, how to prepare your home if we are doing an in-home session, what to expect on the day, and how to set your baby up for success (hint: a full, sleepy baby is everything). I send a detailed preparation guide specific to your session so you feel completely ready when the day arrives.
None of that planning happens well when you are three days postpartum and running on no sleep. Booking early means we do all the good thinking now, so the session itself can just be about showing up and enjoying it.

The days and weeks after birth are not the time to be researching photographers, comparing portfolios, filling out inquiry forms, and waiting for responses. They are the time to rest, to heal, to feed your baby, and to fall completely in love with the tiny person who just turned your whole world upside down.
When your newborn session is already booked, that is one less thing on your mental load during one of the most intense transitions of your life. You do not have to think about it. It is handled. You know the date is on the calendar, you know I have everything I need, and all you have to do is send me a text when baby arrives so we can confirm the timing.
I talk to a lot of mamas in those first few days after birth, and the ones who booked in advance consistently tell me the same thing: they are so relieved they did not have to figure it out in the moment. That relief is worth a lot when you are running on three hours of sleep.

One of the things I hear most often from my Northern Virginia clients is that they felt comfortable with me before we ever met in person. That is not an accident. When you book in advance, we have weeks or months to communicate, answer questions, and build trust before I ever walk through your door.
That comfort matters enormously during a newborn session. A mama who trusts her photographer relaxes. A relaxed mama creates a calmer environment. And a calm environment is exactly what you need for a newborn who needs to sleep deeply enough for those beautiful posed images.
I take consultations seriously for exactly this reason. I want you to know me before the session, not just meet me for the first time when you are holding a four-day-old and running on no sleep. Booking early gives us the time to build that connection properly.
If you have already booked a maternity session with me, this is even easier. By the time your newborn session arrives, we are old friends.

There is something meaningful about the intention behind booking a newborn session during pregnancy. It is a decision that says: this matters, and I am going to make sure it is taken care of. That intention carries through to the images.
The families who plan ahead tend to arrive at their sessions more relaxed, more present, and more able to enjoy the experience. They have thought about what they want. They know what to expect. They are not anxious about the logistics. And all of that shows up in the gallery.
Newborn photos are one of the few categories of images that families look at for the rest of their lives. Your child will grow up seeing themselves as a tiny, perfect newborn. Your grandchildren will someday look at these images. They are worth doing right, and doing right starts with giving yourself enough time to plan.
I’m sure your cell phone camera is fantastic, but DIY photography sessions rarely produce gallery-worthy images. You don’t want to be one of the many parents who later regret not heeding their intuition and acquiring the services of a professional photographer.
You deserve to have newborn photos that you adore, and that’s my job during your Northern Virginia newborn photoshoot! Most DIY photo sessions can rarely compete with a professionally coordinated, aesthetically portrayed picture created by an expert. I have dedicated many hours to practice and training, but I can’t handle it for you if I don’t get you on the books in time!

One of the most effective ways to capture gorgeous photographs of your newborn is to create a comfortable, trustworthy connection with the photographer (aka…me!) I heavily prioritize this connection, which is why I require a consultation prior to scheduling your Northern Virginia newborn photoshoot.
I want to be sure I completely understand your vision and answer all of your questions. Scheduling your Northern Virginia newborn photography session ahead of time allows us to get to know each other. It ensures we are on the same page for your shoot! It also allows you to discuss which images from my portfolio are your favorites and brainstorm a list of possible backdrops or poses.

Scheduling your Northern Virginia newborn photoshoot earlier will help you relieve some stress. You won’t have to spend those first few days after childbirth finding and booking a newborn photographer. You’re supposed to be resting for a few days after giving birth. By scheduling early, you can relax completely, knowing that you’ve taken care of everything ahead of time! Your only job is to bond with your little one, and then let me capture your nugget in one of their most adorable stages!
One of the most priceless experiences you can have as a parent is taking the time to document your journey with your child. In time, these newborn photographs will become a part of your family’s history! They will be cherished by family members for many years to come. Your child will grow up and be able to see themselves as a newborn, and their reaction will be just as unique as yours was when you first saw them!
For best results, I recommend contacting me by the third trimester to ensure availability, but many parents contact me even earlier than that!
If your due date is coming up and you have been putting this off, today is the day. Reach out through my contact page, tell me your due date and whether you are thinking in-home or studio, and I will come back to you quickly with availability and next steps.
I cannot wait to meet your little one. Let’s make sure we have the time and space to do it right.
This happens all the time and it is completely fine. When I hold a date based on your due date, we both understand it is tentative. Once baby arrives, you let me know and we look at the calendar together to find the best date within that 5-to-14-day window. I build flexibility into my scheduling specifically to accommodate early and late arrivals.
That is exactly what our consultation is for. We talk through in-home versus studio, posed versus lifestyle, and I help you figure out which approach makes the most sense for your family, your home, and the look you want. You do not need to have it figured out before you reach out.
Absolutely. Many of my clients book just the newborn session. That said, mamas who do both consistently tell me that having done the maternity session first made them feel so much more relaxed at the newborn session. If you are considering both, it is worth doing both.
My newborn sessions are full-service, meaning the investment covers the session, professional editing, an in-person gallery reveal, and wall art design. For full pricing details, visit my newborn photography page or reach out and I will send you my pricing guide directly.
Yes. I travel throughout Northern Virginia for in-home sessions, including Leesburg, Ashburn, Sterling, Herndon, Reston, McLean, Great Falls, Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Vienna, Chantilly, Centreville, Manassas, Purcellville, and the surrounding areas. My studio is in Leesburg and is easily accessible from across the region.
I send every client a detailed preparation guide once the session is booked. The short version: plan for a full, recently fed baby, keep your home warm if we are doing an in-home session, and try not to stress. Everything else I take care of. The single most helpful thing you can do is feed baby right before we start. Find out more here!
